Headsets and 5.1 surround sound

so i am looking for a new headset and when i looked at turtle beach i saw a headset that said it had surround sound.

my question is,

does it really work (the surround sound)?

also if anyone has any thoughts about the headset that would be great two, here's the line

to have "true" surround sound your computer needs a 5.1 or 7.1 output.
some of turtlebeach's products use a usb sound card.
these work if you don't have a 5.1 or 7.1 output.
but I don't think they work as well.
as for them really sounding like 5.1 I would say that they do, and they are a huge step up from just stereo hedsets

5.1 headsets are better than 2.0 headsets - BUT 5.1 headsets just aren't as good as 5.1 desktop speakers.

I have the Turtle Beach HPA 5.1 headset and I <3 them

i got the turtle beach ak-r8's last week i love the you can hear the shell caseings hitting the ground they r wortyh the money

I thought I would also point out that you can get very convincing "surround" sound out of a regular pair of stereo headphones, probably equal or better to the surround effect of a pair of "true" 5.1 headphones. The reason is because in order to cram 4 speakers into each side of the headphone, the speakers need to be smaller which sacrifices sound quality.

If you have an x-fi sound card, I would recommend that you try their CMSS 3d sound (i think thats what its called) with a pair of headphones you already have and see if you like the effect, if it sounds surround to you, then you would probably be better served buying a quality pair of stereo headphones and using that.

I was looking for the same thing you were in november, and I finally settled on a pair of sennheiser headphones (which im sure sound better than most if not all 5.1 headphones) and an Asus Xonar sound card, which includes the option to use Dolby Headphone technology (which basically takes a 5.1 source, and encodes each channel then downmixes it). I will tell you that I came out of it with an awesome sounding pair of stereo headphones, and for games, I have full surround sound, I can hear things coming from all directions, including behind me.

Just some food for thought. You will still probably be well served by buying a 5.1 pair, just after all my research I went a different route.

yeah if you have the 5.1 then the surround sound is awesome turtle beach are really good headsets

I personally love tritton.
I got the same performance that turtle beach has just for a bit less.
Just an FYI ^_~

I have a Turtle Beach X-52 headset, and yes, the surround sound works. However, I would like to steer you away from their headsets, because they are very cheaply made. If you do go with them, get the duct tape ready. This headset is very comfortable though. I'll give TB that.

I haven't used Tritton, so I can't say much on them. Can't be much worse than Turtle Beach.

I know my Razer Barracudas had true 5.1 but the quality of the mic is not the best(detachable mic).

I just got my new sennheiser PC350's and even though its not true 5.1 the mic is extremely good quality.

In my opinion I would look for mic quality before 5.1 or 7.1 but thats just my opinion.

Razer is coming out with the Megalodon which will be true 7.1
