New laptop

Im going back to school and want a laptop, have one a friend gave me but its a lost cause to fix because of the age and the cost to fix it. And Ive been looking for a new one for the past week and everytime I find one Im interested in its total overkill and would knock the socks off my desktop. So Im asking all you techies to recommend me the best laptop for the best price. Im into computer programming namely C+, and stuff along those lines, also I might use it for a bit of storage since Ill be away for my movies and music and some light gaming, basically CSS TF2 and maybe a bit of BF2142 and COD4. But its not needed to play those on max. Just want one to fit my need but not something thats $2000.

Ive looked and nothing seems good. Might have been best to mention earlier, from past experiences with DELL desktops and reviews from friends I refuse to get one. This is what Ive been having in mind for one, and you can tell the overkill I was talking about.

Really anything under $2000 is an option. Im not too up to date on mobile graphics and processors, so I dont know which ones are best. Had a friend with a AMD Turion and it seemed great for him and I didnt mind it when i used it. But Intel seems to have a higher core and cache speed.

Hp's and toshiba's generally deliver pretty powerful graphics cards, but a few ASUS laptops have very powerful graphics cards also.
If your fine on spending a lot of money a XPS or Quosimo (i think thats how its spelled) have dual graphics cards but will cost a lot of $.

Dell XPS would be good for you. I have an Inspiron E1705 atm, and play tf2/cod4/css/bf2 and it works fine. I will be needing a new comp soon, as this one is breaking.. lol

posted earlier is one sick puppy. My friend bought one from a local computer dealer and it smokes most desktops out there. It does run nice and hot though, probably want to invest in a laptop cooler.
Only thing is, it's definitely a desktop replacement, so don't look to carry it around everywhere unless you have body builder arms. It may say only 8.6 pounds on the specs but the shape and such make it seem like a cement brick.

It is pretty good performance with a decent graphics card. I plan on using this for office work and some gaming at lan parties so i dont have to carry my 80lb computer with me lol.

Obviously, if you want something more expensive and a better bang, I would get something with an Nvidia graphics card and core 2 duo (centrino 2) There are also quad core laptops out now too, but im not quite sure on their price vs the core 2 duo. I think they are in the 2.5k+ range.

My friend i think said he had a Core 2 extreme in his DELL XPS(dont know if its true), but thats an insane amount of power for a laptop. The ASUS one looked cool. I definitely would like to look at one of the semi-built laptops sometime, as those look very cool and seem to be a pretty good deal.

I travel a lot for work, and I can't install games on my work laptop. So, 2 years ago, I bought Toshiba's one and only "Ultimate Gaming Laptop" which has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T7200 @ 2.0GHz, 4GB G.SKILL PC2 5300 DDR2, a GeForce Go 7900 GS 256MB, and a 17" WXGA screen. The 7900GS runs TF2 fine at med-high settings with the 4GBs of RAM.

Anyway, Toshiba has a whole gaming line of laptops out that probably would be worth considering as well. If I were you, I'd go with any dual-core laptop with a 9600 or better.

If would highly recommend a lenovo/IBM ThinkPad I have had mine for about a year now and I love it. If you are looking for something reliable and tough then you cant go wrong with a thinkpad. I have a T61P and it is built like a tank. I just throw it in my backpack and go. I mainly use mine for autocad/solidworks drawings and work stuff so it is definitely not a gaming system, but I have played a few games of tf2 on it and it handles it quite well. Mine has an Nvidia Quadro FX 570M, 2.4ghz core2duo, and 4gigs of ram, and it is plenty fast for my needs. Also IMO thinkpads have one of the best keyboards in the notebook industry.
