Alrgith, i have about 32k points on HLstatsx. I get very little points for killing the majority of ppl (mabye 2 points each) and on average i think i get about 5 points per kill.
ctf_2fort0098.jpg

That is decent run,. no? 7 People dominated, 87-28, more than a 2:1 Kdr. I lost 300 points total.

IS this a bit extreme? I mean we have to get like a 5:1 ratio to see any gain...and don't let me get started on medic points....

Ive noticed the same thing on IR 2fort! I'm at 20k+ stat points, and no matter how well i do on that server i still loose points.

Just means you were frequently killing people you should have been killing while being killed by people who should not be killing you.

So, for example, you get killed by someone who is ranked much lower than you. Let's say they get 8 or 10 pts from you. You lose those pts. So then, if you're just getting 2 hlx pts per kill (for killing those you should be killing), you're going to need a a 4-1 or 5-1 k:d ratio just to stay even in HLX pts. You'd need more then that to earn pts.

But theres no way to avoid being killed by them. The sheer amount of those types of people who take more points from me and the fact that it's IR means that every stinking W+mouse1 pyro/scout/soldier/ect will eventually be able to gain back all the points i took from them in one lucky hit.

P.S. I know how hlstats works! I want to know if everyone else feels that the point loss is too strong.

HLStats is what it is. The worst part about it is not the way it scores things, but that it makes way too many peeps play differently than they normally would for fear of losing points.

I preface my comment with this: stats are just stats and not the measure of the quality of a player. I'd much rather have an awesome time with a fun team than play for points.

That said...

Most of the people who answer "no" are playing on Blackmesa, Dustbowl, Warpath and to a lesser extent Goldrush. The variable point system is HIGHLY biased in favor of Blackmesa by default. BM has a very limited audience when compared to a map like 2fort. Given that, many of our BM players are regulars. Regulars have at least some points, so points lost from them are minimized.

Maps that have a wider audience see a broader player base. There are many more unranked players coming through 2fort than any other map. While many of them are quite new to the game, most are not. Most are as good as the average player on any map.

Losing 25 points to these unranked players is too severe, given that they are only worth 2 points max. A Blackmesa player would gain as many as 5-8 points on average off of a similarly skilled player, while losing perhaps as few as 10 points.

The points gain/loss ladder system just needs to be tightened up to level the playing field amongst all maps. That would be a much more even-handed approach.

Edit: I also want to point out that there is quite a bit of fishy point farming going on anyway. There are a lot of demos with more sentry destructions than kills in the last 28 days. Same for engies with more sentries constructed than sentry kills. Again though, points are just points. The quality and maturity of our community are beyond comparison.

WEll said. I hope someone can do something about that. Oh and i am a bm regular, probably 12/13 of my days have been on blackmesa or the old turbine server.

bTW, is it even possible to change the max point loss/min point gain?

You also get 3-4 points per domination and points for sprees that you have. (like 10 points for a 10 kill streak)

I always get the most points as demoman, you just can't die more than once without killing someone, or you get a even bigger penalty for points lost. I once died 2 times in a row and lost 35 points. However when I die, kill someone, die again, I only lose around 10 points per death.

HLstats also tries to encourage people to multiclass often. If you only play demoman for 2 weeks you eventually lose the max amount of points (around 17 or 18) per death

I played demoman for about 3 or 4 days. WHen I die, I lose a ton of points. So today I went scout in blackmesa and ran around A bonking people to death. Everytime I died I only lost around 5 points. I have noticed this happen a lot before. If you switch to a class you hardly ever play you don't seem to lose as many points per death.

It can be a bit frustrating at times but thats the system we have. It makes it easy to climb the ranks but hard to stay up there and thats fine by me.

I had the same problem until I figured out that if I kill people with ranks close or above me, I rose in rank tremendously. I dont really care that much about ranks, its cool to be close to the top 100 though im not going to lie. But in the end I just play what I think the team needs and let the chips fall where they will. (If you look at my KDR its a lifetime over 2 to 1, yet I still cannot break the top 100) I'll never understand the math behind it so I just shoot first and ask questions later heheeheh.

I guess it is, I lose 25 points nearly every death and gain 2 points on most of the players - even if it's a melee kill. But the only way to counter that is to have more than 4:1 ratio, which I always try to do. Then I actually gain a little bit, and eventually rank up.

I hope nobody misunderstood my post. I'm just talking about hlxstats in general. It's basically a "ladder," and all ladder systems are flawed by default. If you need any proof of that, just look at the awful ladder systems from any RTS ever. There isn't really a way to fix them, so it's not on the CM's, council, or DL's.

Stats in general are always broken, mostly because people can view them. It's kinda like trying to know where an electron is at the same time as knowing velocity/direction. You can't get "accurate" stats if everyone knows them.

So in the end, things like hlxstats are just for fun.

If you send Kendle a PM, bug in vent, send Edgegamers an email, place in the shoutbox, text my cellphone, or make a video blog about HLstatsX being unfair, suxorz, being modified, should be changed, configured wrong, or anything else regarding HLstatsX besides NOT WORKING you will be deleted from the database and never restored.
Let's close this thread before kendle sees this.

Play with better players.

I have 43k and rising everyday.

If you're really worried about your rank, just go medic or engineer for a while.
To me, points don't matter as much as kpd (mine is awful).
