Directed by The Purchase Brothers.

The Escape From City 17 short film series is an adaptation based on the Half Life computer game saga by Valve Corporation. Originally envisioned as a project to test out numerous post production techniques, as well as a spec commercial, it ballooned into a multi part series. Filmed guerilla style with no money, no time, no crew, no script, the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of $500.

Additional Notes:

Valve flew the team out to Seattle last year, and the brothers have been in communication with them since.

David and Ian Purchase are commercial directors represented by Sons and Daughters in Toronto. They are working on an unannounced feature film. Not HL related.

They have been huge fans of HL since the days of "ivan the space biker'

Wow, this is so AWESOME!. I hope they make a movie :D or have they on half life?

Goes to show how much acting costs and how much people overprice actual movies.

That's amazing. As far as the $500 goes, I'm betting that's what they spent on costumes and props. I'm sure the camera(s), computer(s), and software were already taken care of. Still, $500 for those costumes and props is great. How well the CGI blends into the real world is absolutely outstanding. I gotta see if there's a high res version to download.

This was actually really cool despite the fact I'm really, really, REALLY not fond of the guerilla style filming, it's a pet peeve of mine with films because when the camera shakes around it makes my head hurt and I can't see whats going on, but thankfully this was followable and it was very well done. The combination of actual source graphics and live footage had an eerily surreal but effective feel to it.

I kind of like that sort of grittiness. It's what made 8 days later a great flick. Either way this was done beautifully. It does help that I am a huge fan of HL. I was totally into it can't wait for more.

Those guys are gonna be millionare's one day you wait and see, I was very impressed by that little flick and will check out the subsquent releases now.

how did they do that on 500$, they must have a lot of friends who owe them favours who happen to be special effects artists

Pretty cool, though way too short. CPs were epic fail (skill wise) though they are like that in the game. Their costumes were sweet :D

I keep thinking..

CLOVERFIELD

these guys have a tiger by the tail..i hope they keep it up
