FEAR 2: Project Origin is the long awaited sequel to 2005's FEAR, one of my top shooters of the year. FEAR was a stylish mesh of horror and brutal intense combat. It easily drew a lot of influences from Asia- the horror sequences were clearly a tribute to many J-Horrors and the action was heavily inspired by the stunts and choreography from John Woo films, most notably Hard Boiled. The story was really cool, and exceeded my expectations as I had expected the supernatural ghost girl, Alma, to be nothing more than a device to add the "horror" element as well as please J-Horror fans, but the story actually made Alma an important figure and despite being a "villain," I guess, I actually felt kinda sorry for her. While FEAR was a great game, it wasn't without flaws. The variety in enemies was pathetic (Even when you got to the Security Guards, they all looked the same which didn't make sense since only the Replicant Soldiers were meant to be clones.), some of the scares were cliched, the levels were sometimes repetitious and confusing, and the ending offered no real conclusion to the story. What made FEAR good though was the atmosphere, story, graphics (for the time), intense gun fights and the extremely intelligent AI. Now that FEAR 2 is here, lets dig in to it and see if it lives up to the high standards of its predecessor.

In short, the answer is no. In long however, while it is not as good or as memorable as its predecessor, it is by no means a bad game or not worth your time, in fact the gunplay and overall game play is just as furious and intense as its predecessor. The AI is still smart. The effects are still brutal and satisfying. Everything about the gameplay mechanics are solid. It's the story and atmosphere departments that are lacking. The story just doesn't feel like a proper continuation. In fact, it feels like an expansion pack, it just details the aftermath but it never progresses the mystery and such that made FEAR's story so intriguing. In fact I think that the name "Project Origin" isn't exactly fair, the game barely has anything to do with Project Origin other than what we learned of Origin in the first game. The story is just weak, flimsy, and overall probably the biggest disappointment of the package, and the game feels derivative and stripped without it because it means that the spooky happenings and strange events have absolutely no meaning or point.

Another blow is the atmosphere. I'm not an easy person to scare, and save for a few jump out moments and such, FEAR didn't exactly scare me, but it was still creepy and unsettling. The atmosphere was rich and it oozed out from every corner and corridor. FEAR 2 had a couple "creepy" moments but it was never consistent. The atmosphere is just... gone. Once again it makes the game feel stripped of what made its predecessor unique. Most of the "scare" scenes are now just cliches, pretty much. Sure, FEAR had cliched moments, pretty much ANYTHING that tries the J-Horror with creepy children route is going to feel cliched (To J-Horror fans: I'm sorry, but the genre is just as cliched and bland over there as it is here. I'm tired of JHorror movies following in the footsteps of Ju-On and Ringu with all their silly little ghost children and whatnot.) but FEAR broke it up with its atmosphere, here, the cliches are all that exist. To its credit, the sound design can be creepy when the spectral anomalies come in and it becomes a little unsettling when these buggers appear out of finely detailed rifts. Some of the creatures can be a bit creepy too, but they don't really feel like they fit in. I assumed that maybe these strange creatures would've been an after-effect of Project Origin or at the VERY least mutations from the explosion at the end of the first game and the beginning of this game (Yeah, it begins BEFORE #1 ends.) but instead they're just... well.... THERE, and it would be nice to have at least a HINT of what they are and where the hell they came from. At least its nice to have more than only 3-4 enemy types.

The Graphics in FEAR 2 are solid. They aren't anything to write home about, certainly not up to par with games like FarCry 2 and Dead Space, but they are detailed and the effects sometimes distract you from the somewhat poor texture quality in the environments. The effects, just like in the first game, are cinematic and make guns feel all the more satisfying to fire. If you are a fan of gore like me, it feels extremely satisfying to enter a heated gunfight and when the dust settles, the world is literally torn up and there's blood spattered all over the place, sometimes accompanied by a few severed limbs. It's also pretty brutal and cool to shoot those guys with the explosive tanks on their backs, taking out an entire chunk of their body leaving nothing but about a quarter of their body and a bloody skeleton. There's something about the brutality of this game that is very cathartic. Don't think that my love and glee over the gore is a reflection of what I am like in person (Trust me, I've only hit one person in my entire life, I've never been violent, and also when it comes to real life gore, I get queasy, but the fake stuff in movies and games doesn't bother me... well..... because its fake of course :D), it's just good for relieving stress and it makes the game a little more intense though sometimes it can affect the atmosphe- wait, I'm going back to the first game.

The sound design is decent as well for the most part, though I feel that some of the gun fire could be a bit better. Some guns sound a bit weak, especially in comparison to the loud and harsh sounding guns from the first game that actually helped the guns feel like you were really holding them and that there was a real impact going around. The music, some gun effects, and many others are still very well designed though.

The gameplay in Project Origin is great. Its the strongest point of the game, and rightfully so because if the gameplay was a bust, it wouldn't be fun to play and the game IS fun to play. The graphical and sound effects make combat once again have a frantic impact, and while the guns are a bit more generic than in the first game, there are still several weapons that are fun to use and the non-shooting gameplay mechanics from the first game are intact too, such as the "reflex time" and the ability to use some martial arts moves which are a step beyond just bashing things with your gun or fists. The controls are good, but then again its hard to really mess up the controls of an FPS on the PC (Consoles on the other hand can mess it up, though I haven't played the console version so I can't really judge.) although sometimes the controls don't respond, mostly when dealing with the martial arts. They seem harder to pull off than in the first game and sometimes the game will refuse to do them even though you are clearly pressing the right combo buttons. While on the topic of controls, I also want to know what happened to the ability to lean in and out of corners. I know it sounds silly, but that was actually a VERY useful ability in the first game because it made cover a bit more easy to use and shoot from. Maybe they took it out because having those extra buttons might not work on a console controller, but I still don't know why they couldn't include it in the PC edition because its not hard to add two extra buttons to the control set. The gameplay isn't the most varied, its still a first person shooter, but there are some extremely fun mech sequences that break it up occasionally although there are also some rather boring turret sequences. I'm not fond of turret sequences because they just feel lazy. Sitting there and shooting things remotely without being able to move and such just isn't that much fun, and FEAR 2 has at least 3 or 4 of these sequences. Look at the first game which only had one. The level design is a bit more varied as well, although you'll still see a lot of repetitious environments and the outdoor levels have a seemingly common modern problem of invisible barriers and barriers that can't be hopped due to rubble- and it makes the outdoor levels occasionally feel boxed in which ruins the illusion of the game for a minute or two.

The multiplayer is a minor disappointment, mostly because FEAR 1 had great multiplayer. The multiplayer in this game is still fun, but its nothing special. The first game managed to feel unique in its multiplayer due to the slow-mo varients as well as other things, and it feels dumbed down here to the bare basics of multiplayer shooting.

Overall, while not NEARLY as memorable as its predecessor, FEAR 2 is an above average shooter that, once you look past its flaws and disappointments, is another furiously fun shooter. If you lower your expectations a bit and ignore the disappointments, you can jump into Project Origin and have a blast.

Graphics: 8.5/10 (I would've just given them an 8, but I added the extra sub-points because the engine runs smoothly on modern computers and its a pet peeve of mine when graphic heavy games DONT SCALE or DONT RUN [Cough, CryEngine 2. Seriously, CryEngine 2 may look pretty but its one of the WORST engines EVER coded.]
Story: 3/10
Sound: 8/10
Gameplay: 8.5/10
Multiplayer:7.0/10
Overall: 8.0/10

*Wall of text crits you for 1 billion HP*

Nice, well thought-out review, however. If I remember correctly. You gave Fallout 3 a bad review....

I DID give Fallout 3 a bad review, it grew on me after awhile but at first it really pissed me off and I got bored of it for a bit. However, you have to remember that opinions are opinions. Yeah, I know my opinion on FO3 changed, but the fact that I gave it a bad review shouldn't have any bearing on YOUR opinion of the game. When I read reviews, they don't change my opinion, but I like to know other peoples opinions and know things about the game/movie/album/book/whatever. Me giving a bad review shouldn't mean I'm a bad reviewer, its just an opinion.

to much to read, but FO3 wasnt all to bad. great storyline, but ended way to soon... i could have expected alittle better imo

No support for 16:10 resolutions...guess they'll 'patch' it in. A modern day game that doesnt support a common PC widescreen monitor ratio, very disappointing.

o, rly? I run the game at a 1680x1050 resolution and I see no FOV difference in any other resolution. Only game I saw that in recently was Far Cry 2.

One other gripe I have, its not a glaring flaw (Since it has a toggle) but it annoyed me none the less: Motion. Blur. OVERDONE. I don't know how motion blow is supposed to make the game look better, this game OVERTLY abuses it. With Motion Blur on I couldn't see ANYTHING because everything was blurry.

On the more positive note... although I still think they need more explanation, I will admit that the Remnants are kind of creepy and the effect of them puppeteering the dead bodies is really well done.

Strange...i've got black bars at the top and bottom. But thats for the demo. If its fixed in the full version, then maybe ill buy it.

That's a shame. I was disappointed with the story in Fear 1. Seriously. They never explain exactly the origin of the character in FEAR and Extraction point - and the second expansion didn't even have the same character - yet he inexplicably had the same slow-motion reflexes as the first character. It also never wound up explaining exactly where Alma came from, what exactly the extents of her powers are, how they relate to the original character, or anything of the sort.

I was HOPING that FEAR 2 would solve most of these mysteries, but if you're right and the story is as crap as it sounds. I'm going to be extremely disappointed. The story in the first FEAR was so-so, the story in it's two expansions blew big time - for the story in FEAR 2 to be even worse...?

Oh my. What am I going to do. I was looking so forward to it, too.

First off. A lot of that was explained in the first one. I'll give you 'What are Alma's powers'.

But FEAR isn't really a story game, MOST fps's have horrible stories if one at all. FEAR is a scary/scifi/kill crap in slowmo game and that's why I love it.

Crouton- Yes everyone has a right to their opinion. But if you read enough reviews and get to know the reviewers you know which ones fall more closely to your personal tastes. Example- Rottentomatos gives a movie a crappy score, but a particular critic says 'Yeah it's a bad movie, but tons of fun, just don't bring your brain for this one'. Then I'll go see it.

If you want to PM me most of that was supposedly explained in the first one, feel free. I'm aware of Alma's "origins" as a powerful psychic put in a coma, blah blah blah, giving birth to the main character, blah blah blah. But I wanted to know where she was actually FROM, and what exactly happened to make the main character go from demon baby in a research facility to part of a squad attacking it. WHY Alma had those abilities, etc. And that still doesn't explain exactly why the main character's powers differ from hers, the commander dude's, or why the character from nowhere in the second expansion had the exact same powers as the one in the first game and it's first expansion in spite of having apparently no relation. Or things like why the hell the psychic commander what's his face from the first game just magically comes back to life. Or any of the other similar crap in the first series of games.

FEAR is not a a story game for one reason - it's story was explained in an extremely half-assed way. Obviously, the storyline has the potential to be very deep and involving of especially the initial character - and for a majority of the first game it was. Until you beat the game and find out they're actually leaving you with nothing. And then you buy the expansions expecting to learn waht you didn't learn in the first, and you still dont' find out. The Half-Life series has a great story, the Doom series at least had a story you could follow and had relative reason behind everything, Halo had a very involved storyline and it felt good to play it as a result. FPS games can have some of the best story's around.

The point is, that the FEAR series - 1 and 2, has the potential to be an amazing series as opposed to just a good piece of gore-filled eye candy. It has the POTENTIAL to have an absolutely epic, cinematic feel to it's entire franchise but it falls short because of it's lack of story.

Granted, am I still going to buy FEAR 2? Yes, I will. And hopefully I won't be *quite* as disappointed as I was with the first group of FEAR games. I'm sure I'll still enjoy playing it, it will be worth my money undoubtedly. But I get the feeling that instead of being the type of game that is fun to play - AND leaves me with a feeling of epic win afterwards, this will just be fun to play during, and then once it's over leave me wondering why in God's name they couldn't have spent ten more minutes coming up with more thorough explaination for it's story.

TWO LISTEN, please read the whole thing :], thank you! It will answer your questions.

Croutons, OMG I APPLAUD YOU! Thank you, I've been looking for a descent review throughout the whole internet and as soon as I give up...I find this. Oh man, listen to this guy, he knows what he is saying.

This game is no where near perfection, it's no where near the first fear. This game is clearly a console-port, so if you're expecting to jump into the same game as fear, save your money and borrow the game from a friend :d. I swear -.- the multiplayer community is smaller than the cracked version community =\ everyone is playing the 1.0 version of fear while everyone who has the retail is playing the 1.1 version, and let me tell you. EVERYONE IS PLAYING THE 1.0 version -.-. I thought I never see the day when the people who torrent the game gets a bigger community than the people who buy the game =\. Yes, this also means there are no Anti-Cheat for Fear 2 :*(.

but...Two listen, did you listen to the audio records on the laptops in fear 1 =\...I can explain :d SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE FIRST FEAR AND SECOND FEAR.

1. Well first off, Alma is Harlen Wade's daughter, the old man who actually releases Alma from her cell in the first fear. We do not know who her mother is but we only that she was born with psychic abilities and is attuned to other people's negative emotions. She was put into a coma when she was 8, and her genetic material was used in a series of experiments to develop a viable embryo that can be used to create a bio engineered commander. They then implanted the fetus into Alma, which leads to Alma giving birth to Point Man, the main character in fear 1 but his psychic potential was too low. So they did the same thing again and which leads to Alma giving birth to Paxton Fettle, who's psychic ability was enough to command the replica army.

2.The main character, Point Man who is Alma's first son or known as the first protocol , isn't a demon baby XD he's human who happens to be psychic but his psychic potential is too low so he doesn't have powers like Alma. His slow-mo is due to the fact that his reflexes were modified by a doctor which gave him 5x the normal human's reaction time.

3. The reason why Paxton Fettle, Alma's second son also known as the second protocol, AND THE COMMANDER OF THE REPLICA SOLDIERS , was able to come back to life because Alma revived him. That's why the replicas came back to life :P.

4.The guy in F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin is Becket, he's a different character but you ask why he has the same power as the first main character? It's because...remember that scene in fear 2 where he's being experimented on by those doctors and he's screaming in pain? Well it turns out he was injected with someone's gene (possibly Paxton Fettle). That is why he doesn't have slow-mo in the beginning of the game until surgery :D. I WIIIN! Oh and he's extremely psychic sensitive and he's connected with Alma's mind, so that's why Alma tries to kill you but later on she grows fond of you. Which leads to Alma wanting to be impregnated by Becket and having her own baby since her two other babies, Point Man and Paxton Fettle, were taken from her.

MOST IMPORTANTLY! THE EXPANSION HAS THE SAME CHARACTERS D:< Point man is from Fear 1 and Fear Extraction point (expansion)!

If you have more questions you may ask because I'm a huuuuge F.E.A.R freak :d...I even have glow in the dark Alma Boxer's limited editions. LIMITED!!

I must have forgotten that Alma was what's his face's daughter - I don't remember it being on any of the laptops.

And I was aware that Alma "revived" him, but again, her being a psychic and connected with people's "negative emotions" doesn't explain her ability to raise someone from the dead in the blink of an eye - this is why I was frustrated with her powers seemingly having no limit without explaination.

Also, I am NOT talking about the guy in FEAR 2. I have not played FEAR 2. I'm talking about the SECOND expansion to the Original FEAR - released after Extraction Point. It's title is Perseus Mandate. The character in this expansion has the slow-mo ability from the beginning of the game, is from a seperate F.E.A.R. squad - and it is never explained why he has this ability. Unless he is the same person that stars in FEAR 2, but this doesn't make sense because like I said - he has the reflexes from the beginning of the game.

Edit: The main character from the second expansion, Perseus Mandate I'm talking about, is listed as the following on Wikipedia:

"The Sergeant

The player character and protagonist of Perseus Mandate. No background information is given about the sergeant, other than the fact that he is the third member of F.E.A.R.'s secondary team. He seems to possess the same "SlowMo" ability as the primary F.E.A.R. team's point man, but this is never commented on or explained in the game itself, and it is never implied that the sergeant is also a product of Armacham Technology Corporation's genetic engineering experiments. Towards the end of the game, Paxton Fettel implies that he has been expecting the sergeant's arrival, and remarks that the sergeant reminds him of Fettel's brother (the point man). However, Fettel ultimately tells the sergeant that the incident is none of his affair, and warns him not to interfere."

Hence - like I said. It provides enough detail to let you know there is POTENTIAL for a very in depth storyline, but it's too full of holes for it to really be stellar - with things like a random character having seemingly no connection to Alma, the original Point man, or anything similar to what FEAR 2's main character went through.

EW PERSEUS MANDATE D:< OMG! *SLAP SLAP* That wasn't even made by Monolith :\, I wouldn't play it and Monolith had said themselves that Fear 2 isn't related with any of the expansions :D. So I wouldn't really care for "The Sergeant" =\.

hey guys, heres a late video review of the game, in case your interested: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45822.html
I will admit that im disappointed in some aspects, because if these guys are telling it like it is, then im definitely not gonna get FEAR2. Now just a lil heads up, there is some language in the video. Btw, if you just wanna watch the review of the FEAR 2 video, skip to 23:34 & thats where it starts.

I actually loved the story to the game. I wasn't looking for anything ground breaking. I wanted some background, new stuff, and cool stuff. I loved the annoying bastard who kept getting in my way, the "quick time" events, the crazy flashes, and how Alma finally got a solid character beyond oddly naked girl who stands there.

The ending was great! And the last run for the finish line was very fun!

What bothered me about some reviews I've read are how they say the map layouts weren't inventive and the AI was to simple. It's not that these were problems...they were part of the game! We already got used to their AI from Fear 1 and E.P. and seeing as how this story takes place along side the E.P., I don't see why there would be much change. It would be highly stupid to have all new guns suddenly and completely different A.I. enemies.

I enjoyed it at least. I wish people tried to enjoy things for what they are and not what awards they could win.
