What should I buy?

i find few greater satisfactions than building my own computers. i am also crazy and enjoy countless hours of reading about how each component works, why certain things are better than others, and watching prices daily keeping track of what is the best performance per price on components.

I have also found that there is no friendlier online community than those that help people build their own computers. post what you want to spend, what you want to do with the computer, and how future proof you want it, and people will help you pick parts. Also, google "how to build your own computer" and read a couple of guides. If you are up to the task, you can build a super nice computer for much less than anywhere else.

If that all sounds like too much work/time, just buy it from uberclock.

Also: if you do build your own, prepare to spend all of your spare time afterward looking at newegg and replying to these types of posts...

If you are willing to tolerate the crass and curse filled world of 4chan go to /g/ on that website and ask for "the guide" they will mock you probably but they will also post this guide with all of the processors, cases, ram, etc that they recommend. Also those guys may be rude and lewd but they do know what they are talking about when it comes to tech stuff.

If you've got $2000 to spend AND know what you are doing, build your own!
I'm running Vista64-bit, AMD 3.1 Dualcore, 8gigs RAM, 2x150gig 10k rpm HD's in RAID0 for the OS, 2x250gig 7.2k rpms in RAID1 for data storage, and 2xGeForce8600's in SLI for less than $2000.

Nevermind, I just saw the "laptop" criteria. Yikes! Uberclok then. You can get a bit of a discount by going through eGO Mall. Even I'm not crazy enough to build my own laptop.

Build one yourself, im saving up for parts, it'll be expensive either way, but it'll be more fun to build it yourself.

Obviously the case, keyboard, mouse and monitor are very much a personal choice. I like plain "girlfriend friendly" cases, so that Lian-Li is a great deal at 30 bucks off. Monitor is a nice size and price point, but you can easily get a 19" for $130, or even a 21" for $150 these days, so if you don't need the real estate, you can save some money. The keyboard is being used to type this message, and I haven't used the mouse, but it's getting great reviews.

If you wanted, you could replace the processor with a quad core. I personally am not a big fan of 4 cores, simply because they cost more and don't add that much to the system. If you want to spend more money, drop a quad core into this build and add a second graphics card. My advice would be go with this build, and save your cash for a present for your lady, as that will make actually using your pretty system much easier. Don't have a lady? Then buy your mom something nice, spending too much more money than this on a computer is a waste.
