Honestly.

Please, do take a cursory glance at the missive directly below this one. Take care to notice its author, and the dismally recent date of its posting.

Now imagine how profound my disappointment, to be called back again so soon to administer justice to the melon-headed few of you who persist in fraudulence. I'd just sat down with the two things I enjoy most in life ? the most recent issue of Punishment Monthly and a carton of cigarettes ? when the alarm sounded. I feel like a dog owner who's rubbed her pet's nose in a mess on the carpet, only to turn around and discover it setting fire to the drapes.

This time it seems a number of you used an external application to unlock all of your achievements in order to get items unfairly. Coming as a surprise to no one with the ability to retain memories of the recent past, I have taken these items from the perpetrators for one week.

Can I trust that this episode has finally taught you a lesson? I should live so long. Having watched how the sorry lot of you comport yourselves on the battlefield and in the forums, I would consider it a small miracle to trust one of you enough to lick stamps without asphyxiating.

My magazine awaits.

The Administrator

It seems that yet another hack has emerged to unlock all the class achievments. You can understand the administrators annoyance about this as it simply isn't how you should get them. I find it annoying too that people are earning their achievments in seconds when I'm spending 4 hours battling my way through corrupt achievment servers in order to get my unlockables. What do you guys think about this then?

Hacking is wrong. Always. I understand achievement farming and I think that's perfectly acceptable, but using a program getting everything in one click is downright wrong.

Yeah well, this totally misses the point of achievments which are FUN and try to teach you interesting skills for the class so you'll be a better player.

But then I don't go on acheivment servers or anything anyways so I'm probably not gonna get any of the scout unlockables, oh well...

I think it's wrong. I think farming is okay, but I choose not to partake in that. I just find it more fun to get them while actually playing a real game. Almost all of my achievements have come from eGO servers(not the fun server either).

farmings fine, most people cant do what acheivements ask but cheating is not ok

I agree, farming is generally OK (I use it to get those IMPOSSIBLE achievements) but hacking and using a program to do them for you is WRONG.

Well, technically, this isn't cheating. Unfair? Yes. Cheating? No. Hacking? Definitely not.

Eh, I guess you COULD classify it as cheating, but in all honesty, its exploiting. People are exploiting a text file where the achievement information is stored. Its technically the equivalent of playing LAN with the internet off.

Now, I have no problem with 1 or 2 people finding this out and using it for themselves. If they're that dedicated to find away around it, I guess they did a good job of it. But releasing it to thousands of people so they get them without efforts.

Just my $.02

Hacking to get achievements is wrong. Not only that, but I swear that I'm one of the only people in the planet that thinks Achievement servers are also a form of cheating. The so called 'impossible' achievements arnt impossible to get, just hard to get, cause they're supposed to be! Achievements are to give the player something to strive for! Just like my motivation when I play medic is to get enough to reach milestone 3. When I play, I look for the top people and heal them, hoping for the 5 kill uber to happen. I'm not about to go and change a txt file or go to a farm server for that.

Maybe I'm just getting old fashioned... 24 and I feel like I'm the old man here.

Hacking it is most definately. Cheating it certainly is. If I'm in a foot race and decided to use a short cut but try and defend my choice of track by stating I was still running, they'd still call it cheating.

This wasn't a simple achievement server stunt. This was complete unlocking. They didn't even make the 1/10 effort to go to an achievement server and get their unlockables.

Since you're eG level, you ought to know these things already.

It doesn't really matter, the scout updates ruined the game.

A bit too much but I must tell that the scout update is pretty striking when used on ubers, it really stops the ubers, which is kinda annoying, but it is way less than I pictured it would be. Just a little jumping around and the beginning scouts will miss you. And I rather have some little 125 hp dude in front of me than a heavy.

But new updates require new tactics, for instance for all those scouts, use kritskrieg for instance, natasha's or a bit more sentries. It is pretty easy to beat the scouts, dont worry about it harro, in a week maybe 2 the scouts will decline and game will return to normal.

Exploiting a game is cheating, theres consequences if they get caught ;] unless they have gameshark ;D

There seems to be a disconnect on the farming thing between TF2 and DoD. In DoD people have been banned for farming achievments. Here is the Sticky.

In DoD achievments are nothing more than bragging rights. For some of them you get a new icon that floats over your head. There are no new abilities or weapons gained. From the comments I gather that does not seem to be the case in TF2.

People hack the game to get things they have not earned. To me that is no different than theft.

People farm achievements to take shortcuts. It's no different than cutting in line. It's rude. That's disrespectful of the people who play the game the way it was intended. Edge Gamers is all about respect isn't it? That's why I play here.

Just some thoughts from the new guy.

To be honest; Achievments sevrers are fustrating and dissorginised, which in a way makes up for the slightly faster than usual achievment earnings. Half the time an engineer will build a sentry killing everyone who spawns on the other team. Even if that doesn't happen it can be nightmare getting people to co-operate with you. While you can argue that achievment servers are a form of cheating to get the achievments, it comes at a cost of hours of hellish, fustrating gameplay and at the cost of our fun in earning the achievments. The only reason I go through with it is because of the large number of peolple who get the achievments ahead of me, which makes me want to try the new stuff out.
So really in getting your achievments you have 3 options:

Get them fairly - This will be a much more fun way to earning them but it will take quite some time.

Achievment sevrers - Possible to get the milestones in an hour or 2 ( depending of people's co-operation) but saps the fun out of earning them and often feel like a horrible waste of your time until you have the achievments you need.

Use and exploit - Frankly if you get your achievments this way you deserve of have you account banned.

I personally only use achievment servers to get ones which require co-operation with another person (like the 3 kills with an uber on a scout) but after I have the 3 milestones its 'Goodbye and good ridance' to the achievment servers, and I simply earn the remaining 12 - 16 achievments normally; the fun way.

I see no more wrong with subverting the achievement system than going onto an achievement server to unlock your new weapons. I couldn't get the cap-intel achievements, so I just opened up a tiny working CTF map I had made and got the three-times-in-a-row, without-killing-anyone, and 25-total all in under 5 minutes. What is different about 15 minutes of pressing the space bar and 2 minutes of logging onto a server and typing a command?

I understand why Valve did the achievement thing, but I find it very irritating to have to wait forever to get the things just to find out how ridiculously underpowered they are in some cases, or waiting forever just to be on par with other players. It's hard to live without the ubersaw, for instance, but the flare gun is only ever rarely really useful to me.

And people trying really hard to get that last achievement gets really old. I joined eGO shortly after a stint in 2Fort underwater as a pyro hoping I could get a few kills for the associated achievement. Hardhat ended up helping me with the last two achievements (rather than simply chastising me for using an eGO server for achievement farming). I was so impressed with the act of kindness that I joined. But I myself find it slightly irritating to uber a heavy who stops after a kill to taunt and get an achievement but utterly waste the time I took to build the uber. But he just wants his frickin sandwich, I totally understand that.

All of that said, I refuse to use a hack to get anything, it just feels low-class. I only have 2 or 3 Milestones for scout so far and it'll prolly be a while for #3 since I hate playing scout. I don't see Bonk being used all that often except when sneaking past a sentry (which actually seems to work, strangely). I can't aim the baseball for crap.. and seriously, one shot every 10+ seconds?? and rely heavily on double-jumping... the unlockables just seem to suck compared to ubersaw, sandvich, and backburner.

think its wrong to use programs, and its just lazy to use achievement servers. its taken me hours to get any of the scout ones because i dont really understand any of them XD

I got the first scout milestone legitimately in like 3 hours of playing scout. Not that hard. And only 2 more from #2, also 100% legit. I'll probably get the third within the next week. Not that I will ever use bonk anyways...
