School and eGO

Our school has a dumb policy in which playing games is allowed but going to email isnt..fail!~

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT POST

I personally can not stress how important it is to take life's matters first. I made that mistake in April, now here is an excellent story for all of you.

End of March came along and i came to realize that i had been spending more hours playing TF2 than studying for classes, learning music (im a professional opera singer), going to concerts, and preparing repertoire for my own recitals. I thought well I'm happy so there shouldn't be any worries. WRONG. There needed to be a balance.

April 5th came along and i had my final exam for Music History. I scored 55 percent, do you know why? Because i spent 70 hours playing TF2 in the last 2 weeks instead of studying for midterms.

April 14th was the planned day for my recital. I ended up reading off of sheet music because i didn't have it memorized. My pronunciation of other languages sucked sooooo bad, that my own voice teacher left during the intermission. I actually forgot the words to the one song in English that i memorized. It was not only unprofessional, but it was unacceptable. It was only because i played way too many video games.

The week after that i was a complete mess. I was not ready for my Vocal Jury, i had not studied for any of my exams, and i was kicked off of the Uvic Choir trip across Canada (and it was a free trip too). I had to cancel all of my gigs (which came to $8000 lost, YES $5000). I broke up with my girlfriend (who those of you remember me from before, i would not stop talking about her). Than i left Edge Gamers, which really hurt. I felt that through my disregard for my personal responsibilities that i had also let down what eGO stands for. I was a mess.

I than locked myself in my room and worked SO hard to get my act together. I passed my exams, aced my Jury, barely passed my second year. I also managed to make it into performing arts, at the expense of a few things though. Since then im on a letter of expectations. If i so much as fail a class im out for good. I get black balled by every major Canadian University and my education is screwed. The only reason that i am still a member of Edge Gamers is because i achieved balance. I realized what was most important to me.

Now, im a successful opera singer, my education and housing is paid for, I have a stunning girlfriend (different one), I have top marks in all classes, and I'm truly happy. I only wish that i would have figured it out sooner. I was so close to losing all of it, and i managed to understand a few things. Which is really hard to do at a university level.

So I tell you guys now. Figure out your balance in life. Success is always waiting around the corner. Just realize that real life comes first. We will always be here when you get back. If you need to take time off go ahead, we understand. We have been there before. We know how hard it is. Thank you Fatty-Mic-Fat for posting this and giving me a reason to share my story. Just remember, that there are some of us here who enjoy helping people with their own problems. Don't be afraid to send a message to someone in Edge Gamers who you know will listen and give a positive reply. I myself have talked to many Edge Gamers about my problems in the past.

But the most important thing as Drunken Sailor always says. "Real Life Comes First".

Thanks again, i wont be at Saturday's meeting. I have to perform a French Opera in front of 1000 people so ill see you all at the next one.

While on some level I agree, there are times I find myself cutting school to get a new game or something like that, generally see a movie, too.
Also I usually cut work, not school, but I just tell my boss I'm going to go play some TF2 and he's fine with it. I just don't get tips and pay for one day.
If I may quote a song,
"When you get what you want, but not what you need."

I'm glad that many of you are willing to listen and share your stories. many of us have gone down the same path and trying to prevent others from doing the same.

I'll like to add just one more thing that my mother has always said to me that never listened to until highschool. she knows that I am doing ok for myself now, and don't bring it up no more. I hope this saying will also get to you, and hope you will understand it.

"I know everything me and your father say to you is annoying and you don't like it now, but in time, you will understand." not the exact words from my Chinese translation, but it is close to it.

I hope you guys understand it, and take it to heart.

Great post. I can't relay a personal story or put down great words of wisdom, but I will say it is very important to put school first. A great education can lead you anywhere you want to go.

Now at my high school, last year we had Halo, Hitman: Blood Money and the old CS on the computer network and for some reason our tech guy could never find the file location to remove any of the programs. So you could say I was set there anyway. Lol

I'm going to toss my own story in here for a bit of contrast, and while my own personal experience sort of goes the other way - it might help actually to convince people to go to school.

*I never skipped school, and I didn't drop out. I did not study so well for classes, failed a math class, and I DID choose to graduate a semester early in high school. So I technically didn't attend the last half of my senior year. I graduated with a 3.0 GPA, got a 28 on the ACT. That was over two years ago, and I have chosen not to attend a college at this point.

I do not regret it. I do not regret it one bit. Since I've been out of high school, my life took off. I am the first person in my generation of my family, both immediate and long distant among all my siblings and cousins (and I have a lot of them) to get engaged. Our wedding is set for August 1st, and I am INSANELY pleased with my decisions that lead me here. I am also constantly working on improving myself as an individual and an artist, of which I must confess I have a relative gift for. I'm far from the best, but I'm also far from the worst. I tend also to write better than most people, regardless of age or education.

Note however, that in spite of my being insanely happy with my position in life, it required me to do certain things. I had to pick up and leave my family, to spontaneously move hundreds of miles across the country to live with my fiance and her family. My first job was a high schoo janitor, and my second and present job is working crap hours and crap wages at McDonald's. IN SPITE OF THAT, though, we have more money saved up than a lot of people our age, because we are very smart with our money.

** Note also, that my situation could be considered relatively unique - not only because of the career path as an artist that I am pursuing, as well as so seriously pursuing my relationship at such a young age, but also because during my last year of school, I was in the mental health ward - the "psych" ward, twice - and was diagnosed with a couple mental illnesses for which I have always refused medication against the advice of every psychiatrist/clinical psychologist I've ever seen. As a result of my having to be very careful about the way I live my life, some things - like attending a college, are both potentially unnecessary from a career standpoint as well as possibly dangerous and unhealthy from a mental standpoint.

As a whole, I do not regret anything that has led me to this position. Including not going to college, and leaving high school early. I think however that I was wise to include backups such as a high ACT score and the fact that I still recieved a diploma and not a GED. Within two years, I will be married - on my own, and while I might not be working the most prestegious of jobs yet - I will likely be on par with many professional artists, capable of things most college kids can't do themselves.

In closing, I will say this: I believe that 98% of people should be going to school, and probably going to college. A lot of what you go through in these places will be irrelevant to life, and when you're in college - depending on your career - you still wind up being able to learn more on your own than you can through any of their classes. However, a lot of people are terrible with connections and being able to make them with various people - and college and school can help a lot with that. A lot of people are also incapable of teaching themselves beyond and outside of school.

And so I suppose what I'm trying to say is this: There are more important things than school. You are not trapped in dead end jobs for the rest of your life because you do not attend school, however - if you're going to forgo it - you sure as HELL had better have some sort of surefire backup plan that you're certain is more important to your long term benefit. Because most people don't have these things, it is better for you to probably stay in school.

I don't have any idea what the hell I just said.

I completely agree. Except the only difference is that i value God first, then family, then friends, then education, then the clan, then gaming. Nice post and the Bill Gates thing was kinda funny ;)

My school have this kind of spy program where they can access your computer from their computer. So, I can rarely ever go on anything without being under the risk of being caught :P

That lil spy program is called Lan sweeper or VLC or Remotedesktop connection my friend i loled at that lol

can't believe I haven't posted here yet. my philosophy is that nothing gets in the way of my education, because right now that's the most productive thing I can do. I go out of my way to make sure I come out of high school knowing everything I could possibly have learned; if my parents don't push me hard enough, I'll push myself. regrettably this means that during the year I rarely have time to play CoD with my friends, and I really wish I did. but unfortunately that's not how my priorities are set and nobody's priorities should be such that headshots are more important than the understanding of the world around you.

Sometimes, though...you need to remember not to let your schooling, get in the way of your education.
