Onboard USB doesn't work

Can anyone help me out here? For some reason my onboard USB won't work. My brother had been using my computer earlier before when I wasn't home, but when I came back it was shutoff and my sound card was yanked from the PCI slot. I asked him what happened and he said that he was unplugging his headphones and while he was doing it, he got up and the cord caught on his foot and the sound card came out. He didn't want to mess with it so he just shut the computer off.

Now, not only did he break my sound card by doing that (the computer was on while it got yanked out) but for some reason I can't plug anything into my USB drives anymore, making that computer I have pretty much useless. My gaming mouse is USB and so is my keyboard, and my sound card is ruined and I need a new one. I probably won't be playing any games for a while.

Does anyone have any clue as to how I can fix this? I hope it isn't actual physical, onboard damage that has to be taken to a shop to be fixed. Thanks!
 
are your USB ports integrated to your motherboard or is it connected by a wire to the motherboard?

That isn't happening. If it needs to be "physically fixed," you're looking at a new motherboard. This is really weird. Your sound card wasn't screwed in? You must have some super heavy duty wire on those headphones. I would think the wire would snap long before a sound card was dislodged. You can buy a PCI card that has USB ports on it, and your motherboard should have onboard sound.

The USB slots on the back of my PC are connected directly to the motherboard, that's the onboard USB. There are two USB slots on the front of the computer that have a wire going through my case and connect to the motherboard.

The sound card wasn't screwed in.

My onboard sound somehow broke a long time ago, but everything else works.
 
when you say you can't plug any USB devices in, do you mean you cannot physically plug them in, or that they're not recognised by the system?
 
I went to microsoft.com and looked around their troubleshooting part of the site, and it seems that I found some help. I found out that I needed to go to my device manager (I think thats what its called) and uninstall the keyboard from being recognized. I did this, and now the keyboard is recognized, but windows doesnt know what it is.

My question is, if I get my recover discs will this fix the problem? I ordered them online from the microsoft site, and I'm hoping it will allow me to have a clean, new version of vista. Should this work?
 
No, it doesn't. Why? If there was would it mean that my keyboard is broken?

Should a fresh installation of vista fix my problem?
 
A fresh re-installation of Vista would fix the issue, but if you were to do that, you would have 2 backup all of your files somewhere (depending on how big your hard drive(s) is/are will depend on how long itll take 2 backup your system). Also, do yourself a favor in the future & make sure that all of your hardware is screwed on tight, this way your sound card wont get dislodged from your brother trying to get his headset out. Thankfully I dont have any bro's or sis's that currently live w/ me, but I always make sure that everything is screwed in (just for sake of habit). Anyways, we want to make sure that you doing the re-installation of the OS to be the LAST possible option.
 
as pillar said, reinstalling vista should solve the problem, but it's a really big hassle.. and you need to make sure that everything, and i mean EVERYTHING, you have on your hard drive is backed up somewhere, cause if it isn't, you're not getting it back=S my only concern is that maybe it's the keyboard which is broken, but since you said no USB devices are being recognised that doesn't seem so likely!
 
I had this trouble on my other PC... I had to change the motherboard. Thankfully I got an ABIT Fatal1ty AN8, which was very good at that time.
 
Thanks for the help everyone.

My most important files will be backed up, but I'm going to swipe everything else off and reinstall vista. If that doesn't work I'll look into buying a new replacement mobo.

I'll also make sure everything is screwed in and secure this time, I don't want to go through this again and have to buy a new soundcard. :P

The recovery disks will be here tomorrow, I'll let you guys know how everything goes to make sure I don't have anymore problems.

Quick note tho...I had a similar problem before when I would plug in a new USB item into the motherboard and it wouldnt be recognized. The problem for mine was apparently I had burned out the USB slot by improperly plugging it in. (The USB slots are located at the back of the comp and i was lazy so i decided to go for the plug n feel approach to plug it in..xD Bad Move Dont Copy) Anyhow it causes the USB not to work at all. However I never had a sound card yanked out of my comp before...btw how did that happen? I kno ur bro was using it and tripped and it came out because it was screwed on correctly but generally arent the sound ports located behind the comp? and if the sound card was pci isnt it installed from the left side of the comp? (Assuming the power button facing towards u)..Im having a hard time imagining how the sound card would of popped out
 
Bad news:

I got the recovery disks today and spent two hours installing it, and nothing changed.

My onboard sound doesn't work, and none of the USB slots work.

Worst of all, after I finally got done setting up this crap and installing it, I logged onto the account I created and all the computer does is say "welcome" as if it's actually going to work, but I just see a black, blank screen, and the computer still runs and doesn't shut off. I let it sit for an hour to see if it was just loading or something, but it was still blank. I pressed down the power button to restart it, and then the computer restarted and it said "windows error recovery" and gave me a few options (to restart windows normally, safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, safe mode w/ command prompt), and since the USB isn't working on it I couldn't select safe mode and try and fix anything.

This is very, very upsetting. I have a really nice computer that is now useless, and after spending a large amount of time trying to fix with recovery disks I spent money on, it won't even log me on and my USB drivers won't work.

I'm not sure if I should even invest anymore into my computer. I have two options:

1. Try and find a way one more time to fix the computer, and be positive it will work (if it doesn't I won't waste my time with the computer).

2. Just forget about it and stop playing video games.

Some might say "stop playing video games?! nooo" but frankly this is pissing me off so bad that I don't really care about playing video games anymore.

I'm willing to give it one more try, but if that doesn't work I'm done investing my time and money into gaming and I'll be done with it for a long time, or until I can afford to buy more parts for it.

I think the best solution is to buy a new, affordable, reliable, cheap mobo that will do the job until I can save up more. Any other opinions or ideas?

Alright, the computer does actually work and the recovery disks worked and reinstalled it correctly, but once I startup the computer and logon to my account, programs start running and it logs on, but the screen turns black.

After using google for some help, I've found that others have the same problem. And after reading this article, it seems that my settings are probably too high since I don't have my video card drivers installed: http://ask-leo.com/why_does_my_screen_go_black_after_the_windows_screen_when_i_boot.html

I'm hoping this will fix the issue. And I'm pretty sure the USB slots on my mobo are fried, I'll have to buy a new motherboard.
 
My computer randomly started to work and it logged me on without giving me that black screen, and I got a PS/2 keyboard and mouse so my computer actually works now :D.

Once I actually got logged on, I kept getting errors so I had to put the recovery disks back in and reinstall vista again, and it so far has got rid of all of the errors. Bad news though: I still have no sound and the USB slots don't work, I'll need to get a new motherboard (which isn't too expensive) and sound card (which I needed anyway).

Good news though, I will be able to finally play CS and TF2 again :D only without sound temporarily. :D
