Best Gaming OS

So, I ordered a new rig which should arrive in the middle of this week (2 days), yay!

Anyway, I will be upgrading to 4GB of RAM and I was wondering what the best 64-bit OS to run...

Should I just run 64-bit Ultimate? Or Business, Enterprise? I have my choice of any of them.

Please lemmie know what you guys are using with success.

Given the choice of the three Ultimate. Why not if you can afford it? If you don't need the stuff in the business editions then consider Vista Home Premium. Just do not get home basic or starter editions they're not worth the money saved.

Wikipedia has a description of the differences between the editions. You'll get the same gaming performance from all them really.

I like ultimate, but you will want to make sure everything is updated other wise you may have some issues.
As a side not my setup is phenom 2 3 gig, 8 gig of 1066 ram, a ati 4870 2 gig ddr5 and every thing runs great.:D
 
I run Vista 64 Bit Ultimate with 6GB 1333MHz ram :)
 
I run Windows 7 with 6GB of ram. It runs better than Vista, can use DX10, and is easier to use than XP.

I found that really amazing that windows 7 runs so much better then Vista and its only in the BETA stage. I had windows 7 then decided to move back to Vista so I could get some programs to work properly again. But overall, windows 7 boots and loads programs WAY faster.

IMO, Ultimate is not needed.... I would just get home premium x64 (unless you got cash to just blow away hehe)
 
I'm using Vista based drivers, and they work great. Wireless worked out of the box (Didnt in XP) and my video card came with Windows 7 based drivers, however I uninstalled them and installed Catalyst 9.2.
 
The ideal setup in my opinion is to have two hard drives, one having 64-bit vista ultimate and the other having 64-bit windows 7 ultimate. Windows 7 is the best in terms of gaming. Its easy, and uses much less resources(namely RAM) than vista does, but due to its being in BETA stage it has compatability issues, so thats why its good to have both.

I would get two hard drives. Buy vista ultimate 32 and 64 bit (you can buy them together) and download windows 7 64-bit beta because it is free and better than vista.

I would think I could just run two partitions on a drive and make it dual bootable... I was thinking about putting linux x64 on the box as well, but at this juncture (since I'm not in school and my job is windows-based)... What's the point? I will however check both of them out, I will only need a few drivers for my P45 based mobo and the vid card, so there shouldn't be too much incompatibility.
 
If you can afford it then go with ultimate! If you cant, then go with home premium as its fast and not cluttered with crap.
 
hey dudes, I only had experience with Vista Home Premium and XP (although I used Windows 3 (whichever was the 1st one) and 95 and Win2k) - XP wins without breaking a sweat. however nowadays you can't even order XP on some systems.

and hey other dudes, you run Windows 7? how is it? I heard of the worldwide beta test - did you get it that way? is it glitchy? also, the beta test will "run out" in a few months' time, right? what do you do then - reformat/clean install? that seems harsh. I got thousands of little items and apps which I cannot imagine reinstalling. it'll take ages.
 
id stay away from windows 7 , honestly i have seen som,e issues with it and steam (mostly a driver issue with mobo ) but realistically , if you want sumfin dependable id stick with good old xp x64
 
and fyi guys , ultimate and basic and premium are all the same , with a little google you can enable aero and as well put media center on it , if you go with vista go cheap , but id wait till the release of win 7 and stick with xp x64 until then

and 2 hdd is also not needed , you can dualboot them on one hdd just with 2 partition
 
I went with Vista x64 ultimate, installing the games as I am typing this... I get OSes through work =)
 
I would say save your money and get 7 when it comes out..im using vista ultimate right now and im not happy with it overall..i like to play older games sometimes and i run into numerous issues when trying to run them..

XP 64 is known for horrible performance in games and programs, and bad driver support. Definitely stick with either Windows 7 or Vista.

(Or, if anything, XP 32 bit.)
