well, this is just a question for everyone but first lets look at my computer.
Computer:Dell Pentium 4 3.4ghz
Ram:2gig ram, ddr or what i can't recall.
graphics card: ati X300 64mb ram on it. (nothing special about it)
I have bought a NVIDIA GeForce 8400gs 256mb
With my old grapics card it was bad to play games with, my fps was bad, A heavy would walk by and i was like..Slow or a mass battle would accrue and lagg for me. I used to have a gforce 5600 and i was good, was this 8400 upgrade a good one? Cus the one i have is not very good, Your option people, tell me your thoughts. Of if this needs to go in tech help, plz put it there.

8400 is not a very good choice, I mean from x300 to 8400 it WILL make a decent difference but, if anything I would go with 7600,7900,8800. Since those were the more stable ones.
To tell the truth it all dependence on the PSU and the amount of money you are willing to spend on a new card, however I noticed that you have a P4-thus putting in, a lets say 8800, would just bottleneck your system.

Hopefully someone can explain it better than I do, since I am not a perfect computer pro.

PS. I have a x300 running on a family comp, so I know how you feel.

so, yea a higher graphic card would kill my system, but yea i am just looking for a better card. If i wanted a high end grapics card i would fork out a 300$ for something, but i don't have that kind of cash. i just want something that is above the required settings for a game.. and it to not lag when there is a heavy shooting near me. and play oblivion with out too much lag.
