Intel i7 series or the old QX series?

So it has come to the time again..when i need to build a new computer for a friend..i was originally going to stick with the specs of my rig and use a Phenom processor around 2.5 ghz and overclock it to 3.0 with custom cooling fan..however lately i've been hearing tons of good stuff about the new Intel i7 series except not too sure of how it fares on the gaming. At the same time i also compare it to intel's QX series and im very interested in that..however in comparison i dont kno which one is better overall..gaming only....i7 seems and should be the better one but the QX series doesnt look half bad at all..any thoughts on this..?
 
one more thing any thots on a good cpu fan for the processors above? something that will keep the cpu decently cool even with a bit of overclocking..
 
Well, if you live in the states i hope you are planning on purchasing from newegg.. as they have some great deals always going on.

Meanwhile, the core i7's use a new socket, meaning you will need a new motherboard to support it. so if your on a budget, go with the Q series. They are getting cheap and aren't much slower than the i7's.

i totally agree w/ fuzion on the cpu fan, i use the same exact 1 on my c2d cpu & its awesome. i currently have my cpu (e6750 @ 2.66ghz oc 2 3.0) & will prob do more oc here in the near future.
 
i7 currently doesn't bring much more to the table in the gaming department, when compared to the QX series, and is much more expensive. However, with the older LGA775 based platform your processor upgrade path is limited since no new 775 processors will be designed form now on.

Get a QX series and you'll probably never be able to upgrade the processor without buying a new motherboard or get i7 and pay a premium, it's your call. That's the way I see it on the intel front anyway. AMD, of course, is a different story.

noctua, thermalright, thermaltake, and cooler master are the best companies for CPU cooloing. Noctua or thermaltake probably the best.

because I'm still picking parts for my future PC, I will say this!
one - always buy the one processore BEHIND the very latest model. don't buy the i7 for not as it's 10x as expensive as a good one like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036 and it can overlock to 4.3 I think
the main game thing is to have a good GPU right? clock speed is not very important. I'm buying that for myself in the near future so I recommend it. if you're gaming have 1GB on your video card. maybe cooling if you're gonna OC.
the thing is the LATEST cpu's always cost unbeleivably high. so I really can't justify (to myself or anyone else) buying i7 right now.
 
I've had an I7 sitting in my room for... a week now... and haven't got to use it... Haven't gotten to use any of my new computer yet... just ordered a new PSU becaue mine isn't big enough to run it all....

EVGA 9800 GTX +
I7 920
Zulman 9900 CPU Fan
Asrock Super Computer Board (Supports 24 Gigs of RAM!!!)
3 Gigs DDR3 RAM
And just ordered a 650W Coarsier PSU... Should be here today!!!
 
I'm not sure if you'd see much difference with an i7 right now. Maybe in a year or two when developers have had time to take advantage of it but for now i'd probably go wiwth the QX.
 
hmm yeah thats what i thot with regards to the QX vs the i7..people told me the i7 was a better choice b/c of the 8 logical cores..but the raw power behind the QX is much more appealing 2 me..thanks all
