BIOS (Sticky Startup?)

OKay so here is the thing lately for me..when i boot up my comp it goes into the normal startup screen of a bios check..detecting IDE drives, RAM etc etc..lately however when i power up my computer it doesnt do this and literally pauses or freezes at that step..thereby preventing a normal boot up.. In such a case i usually just hit the restart button and it would boot up normally again. However lately its been happening more often than I would like and I want to determine the cause of this problem. Do you think flashing the BIOS would solve this problem or is it a sign of a deeper underlying problem? Thanks for all your help.

Read what it says, if its freezing then something might be breaking/going wrong

see thats the thing no error msg comes up ..weirdly it only just pauses..and when i restart it just boots up normally..it doesnt happen often just once in a while..and b/c of that im just a bit worried that it might be a symptom of a bigger problem

How long exactly are you waiting before you declare it 'frozen'

Try the jumper or remove the battery to clear the CMOS ram. See if that works. It sounds like its a POST issue. Maybe Hardware. Any recent changes?

So when you say that it literally pauses or freezes..... do you have a BLACK screen with a cursor flashing on the TOP left hand side?? or do you have stuff writing on the screen and it is frozen (eg. hardware detected, bump junk pile)??

might be an external device causing the problem. I would unplug all USB devices from your computer(except mouse and keyboard) and test for a week or so to see if your startup still hangs. of couse you would plug the rest of the stuff back in after you got into windows. but if it helps by unplugging all your devices and accessories i would just do trial and error until you figure out which one causes the hangs at startup.
