hey i have been playing cs ever since the old valve days. i have heard numerous ways of smoothing out your frames and such. what is the best way to get the best gaming experience? i have tried fps_max 100, rate 15000, and so on.... what are the best ways, i get lag everytime i see smoke grenades and such.

If it's network lag you're worried about, set these commands:

rate 20000
cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 66

Also, if you have a router, try to set up Quality of Service (QoS) and set your game's ports to the highest setting.

If it's video lag, try to:
Set the graphics at a lower setting
Overclock your video card (Not a huge improvement)
Run fewer background processes,
etc, etc.

i found QoS (using linksys), but what is the port steam uses?

prolly not worth it to overclock your video card

thanks blue..i never overclock video card. i dont know how and it sounds bad

Overclocking your video card isn't 'bad', it just makes it run hotter, and allows you to squeeze a bit more performance out of your card. What card do you have? If you have an EVGA card you can use precision, their free overclocking tool. And as mentioned above you should lower your rendering quality. If you have it on high then its a bit more straining.

how do you lower your rendering quality? im not at home so idk the video card, but i think its ati x350?

thanks existence ill try that...does your config change everytime you exit steam?

Lowering the render quality is just lowering the graphics settings (resolution, texture detail, model detail, shader detail or whatever, etc.) in the options in the game. A lot of times the default/recommended stuff is too slow.

if you use wireless, then try to switch to Ethernet.

or like Existence said, set up QOS and maybe even forward the game's ports to your local ip. there's plenty of tutorials about this.
