Why Did MAUL Crash?

Why did we post the Big eGO news? Why did MAUL go down? Why why why?

Well we will tell you why: HostGator decided to cut our webhosting off because we were using too much bandwidth. This is despite having a Professional Account with them. They did not tell us in advance, they did not give any warning, they just turned us off. We asked why and they said something to the effect that we were using more than our fair share of bandwidth.

So, we scrambled around and got another server from SoftLayer and we are going to do our own hosting for MAUL and some other things that keep eGO running like a fine tooled machine.

It took Kendle and Dominion over 9 hours of work to get the server, set up the server, get DB's online, line out each game server with the admin DB.

An all day affair thanks to Host Gator's professional webhosting account. Well, we guess you know you have a big eGO when Host Gator kicks you out!

Not to mention taking up our Advisors, DL's and Council people's time adming servers thru rcon.

Thanks everyone for your hard work!

you guys are the best, its just incredible how hard you guys work yourselves for the community, thank again.

and one more thing ill like to add, if our admins ever go down again for some reason, e's and eG's, PLEASE, do not announce to the pubbers that our admin is down, this will give some of the pubbers ideas, and the severs will go in chaos some times, i know this, and ask the people that were on jail that day. Thank you all the way up the ranks!

First, Kendle and Dominion, you are awesome! I can't find words that do you justice for all the hard work you have put in on EdgeGamers.

Second, I have played and worked on the DoD servers twice now in recent times where we lost admin powers. I want to give a big THANK YOU to those on both sides of our servers who helped us maintain them. This includes admins all the way up and down the ranks.

How many clans can pull together like that? I have seen system problems in my professional life that require people to go the extra mile just to maintain operations. It is a tremendous accomplishment when people work together under adverse conditions. The response of those involved at EdgeGamers deserves to be at the top of that list.

Congratulations to all on a job well done!

Take them to court. They have "unlimited" bandwidth. Threaten to sue. Did that with simplenet back in 1999.

Anyways, that's why we have our own hosting box.

Glad we have some guys who know what they are doing. Thank you for the hard work.

Host Provider Business Practices & Shameless Plug

First off, I'm not defending Host Gator (less business for them means more for me or other eGO partners), but you could not sue them (see Terms of Service below)

Every host company has Ts & Cs, an AUP, or a TOS. Most of those say the exact same thing. The difference between a good provider and a poor provider is how they handle problems when they arise.

Host Gator should never have removed content w/o first contacting eGO, but they were within their rights to do so. Yes, the business/professional plan included many unlimited features, but anyone who works on servers knows that you can't offer this without over subscribing their machines. You can't make money unless you do that. This is how they make money and to protect the other customers they remove sites that use high CPU. Right or wrong this is what they do.

Take the eGO website for example. This site uses between 5% and 40% of this web servers available CPU, 15% average, depending on site load, day of the week, game server activity, and special events. Rather than selling based on the max CPU used I sell based on the average used. So instead of 2 customers I can sell up to 6 customers per server. Now, here is where hosts get tricky. 6 customers won't pay for a server and provide profit so you depend on oversubscription and the fact that most people won't use 15% of the CPU. Places like GoDaddy and Host Gator will put 100s of customers on one box. For 99% of small sites this is fine, but when you get a popular and ever growing site like eGO you consume more resources than planned.

Is this right?... HELL NO, but it is a norm in the industry.

So what sets companies apart. Companies like Host Gator don't care that they just lost $5 - $13 per month because they're still making at least $1300 per month on the web server w/o our business.

eGO has grown so much over the last two years which is why they use many dedicated servers and trusted hosting partners like DGX. Companies like DGX or SoftLayer remember that customers make the business. Host Gator is dealing in volume with the average customer spending $5. SoftLayer deals with customers paying $100s. DGX splits the difference... We don't charge a lot, we don't over subscribe, and we never terminate w/o cause or ample notice.

If you're using Host Gator and you want to support eGO then I suggest pulling your business away from them and going with a customer friendly hosting provider.
