I'm for it. Big time. I think this will stop alot of those "bad" servers. So this could go two ways, a lot of people randomly connecting to our servers and dropping really fast to make our rank go down, or it could be a good thing for us

What are your thoughts?

Interesting, I highly doubt many people will connect and drop fast from our servers just to make our ranks go down, besides we have a lot of regulars and we will probably keep our top spaces. This will probably also bump lotus out of the top...

This looks really interesting, I like how valve is trying to get the good servers recognized.
This is gonna be a good thing because the bad servers using fake numbers will now be avoided easily. I don't see why people would join then suddenly disconnect just to get our rank down though.

So, stay for at least 45 minutes and give edgegamers 30 points!

Go go go!

Time to show valve how great our TF2 servers really are!
I'm sure some people would connect and disconnect just to down our rankings, but, it would be a minority and if we catch them purposely doing so, we can...punish them

-swish- goes the banhammer

This is a great thing. The fake servers wich have to lie, using a fake player count to get thier servers up can't do it any more. And if they had to lie about thier dedicated playerbase in the first place, I doubt they will have the manpower that would be willing to take the time to contantly connect/disconnect to lower our ranking.

Great thing, bad system. I've already seen a couple posts on steam forums threatening to purposely drop eGO servers already and the update has barely been out. A modification will most likely be needed so the system doesn't encourage greifers.

Oh no.

Here we go again......
Someone shoot off an email to valve asking them if "server bombing" is possible. We can expect many disgruntled people fed up with our "pay to play" admins. Looks like edgegamers is going to have to donate all our admin payments to charity to get us out of this mess. It'll be weird donating time, fun, sweat, tears (of joy) to charity. Oh well, we're just like that ;D.

I have been around a LOT of servers and eGO has the best run hands down. Its not even a competition. Even with griefers we will stand above them all. Bring it on.

With only 15 minutes of play required to "break even" on a server, I think there's great potential for us to score well here. With a server that's mostly full, I don't think there's a lot of availability for someone to sabotage us, though it is possible. We'd just have to work with admins to try to take care of people who are intentionally trying to harm our rating there. On a server that's consistently 3/4 full, one player could successfully destroy the rating if he wanted to. By connecting and disconnecting once per 60 seconds, one player can negate the positive effect of 15 others (or more, we're operating under the assumption that those 15 have not been there between 15 and 45 minutes. Over 45 and they earn no more points, and under 15 and they're still a net loss without the effect of any other player's actions).

Is there some script, mod, or something we can implement to prevent or deter players from disconnecting/reconnecting? It's a shame they have that whole "-15 on player connect" thing...why not just ignore the connection, and score one point per minute AFTER 15 minutes.

Basically, if we could ensure that no one would abuse this system to intentionally harm our ratings, I think it couldn't help but be awesome for us. Think of all the time the servers are totally full, like 30+ players all playing steadily. Each minute that's 30 points for us, so it takes only 15 total minutes of play at that full-ness to make back the negative points of every player's connection. After that it's straight gain, and there's no penalty for servers that have emptiness now and again, like ours can overnight. Sure, there's a penalty for refilling them, but if they get and stay reasonably full then that's very easy to make up for.

OH NOES

What will happen to our beloved Fun server?

Unless all pw servers don't count in the future

EDIT:also, the -15 on connect shouldn't go into effect until 5-10 minutes after the player joins, to prevent massive server bombardment.

Nobody go in and out, I don't think it will cause problems. It only lower your rank if the players join then immediatly leave. At least I think

The only server i see this being a problem is with our 2fort, as for " bombing " i think they will be smart enough to limit it to steam ID's as far as points are concerned

Overall its a great Idea

Well, it's -15 when then enter, so that way no one can just post an appealing server, have people join, but it turns out the server is really bad, but they still get all the points. Then it's +1 point for every minute a person stays on there, max 45 points (minutes). The max is set in place so servers can't just have people stay on 24/7 to get their scores up.

What's bad, is there are definitely going to be "bombers", especially on eGO servers, since griefers seem to gravitate towards our servers. They should put some security measures in place, like if they see someone joining and leaving a server alot, they should be mentioned to the "owner(s)" of the server, to pass judgment on a ban or not (that way it's not an auto-ban, in case the person actually has a good reason to be joining and exiting). They should get community input and improvement on this before implementing it. This is a very good idea, though. I'll sure as heck get rid of those bot servers!

The post said it ignores all password protected servers. So the fun server is a-ok! :D

I see a couple of problems with the new system..
Say someone starts to act up, and an eG admin decides to kick. If that person comes right back in, thats 15 points. If the person keeps acting up and the eG keeps kicking over and over again, then it will be the same as bombing the server. We are going to have to implement a few minor rules regarding kicking multiple times.
Another problem I see is if the server is having a bad day and decides to crash every couple of minutes, like the fun server did once, while people are rejoining the moment it is open again, then that is another form of server bombing. This would be accidental, but it would still kill the ranking of the server.

This will probably also bump lotus out of the top...

I really dislike those servers, had a very bad experience with them. On top of the fact that their servers show false amount of people on their servers at all times I have a very big problem with the founder of it. I had joined one of their servers a long while back and the map was gravle pit...the team I was on was completely dominating the other team and they couldnt even cap one point...so MANA (i believe her name is) stops the clock at 0:01 seconds and after about 30 more minutes of this unlimited time they finally cap one point and then the second...after another 30 minutes of still not caping the last point MANA decides to turn the lights off...after realizing that this still isnt working for them she makes all sentries attack its friends and causing fire damage...when this didnt work she made everyone turn completely red, after this, i just left. I hope this new change puts them in their place.
