Man I played gta san andreas for like 100 hours.

I always parachute out of army planes and shoot rpgs at police officers. It's almost a daily thing for me.

No kidding? I just hijacked a biker, robbed the bar, then died. Picked up a mushroom, and did it all again. I love violent games!

For sure, GTA is the pinacle of pure violence...Im sick of the media suggesting that games are the main root of this problem. It has to be mutiple things obviously not just the fact he use to play CSS. My prayers go out to the victims.

I doubt he did it because of video games. It must have been something else, he might have had a terrible life, getting bullied, who knows? It's really sad though.

Simple fact is, everyone wants a "scapegoat" when something like this happens. It's so easy to blame games because they ARE violent.

But me, personally... I find blowing somebody away with a minigun in TF2 to be fun, but I'd never want to do it in real life.

To blame video games for this tragedy is to cheepify the death and the crime, and distracts people from the real issues... whatever it is.

For every million people who don't kill somebody after playing Quake...

Anyway, this specific story is one of the most unbiased stories I found. Basically, the kid learned how to use guns, decided it'd be fun to shoot people, and went and did it. No voices from backwards spinning records told him to do it. Not that they don't have an "investigative report" about the dangers of airsoft...

Anyway, my thoughts are for the families and friends of the victims. It's unfortunate that there are people in the world who will kill people only for the reason that they happen to be handy. That kid may have learned to use a gun, but he obviously didn't learn how to respect it.

(I find it interesting that his only friends at school were his friends "because he had money." I think this will lead to the actual issue...)

so much easier to blame video games ...

we just learned this in psych 101. video games CAN have an influence over a child's behavior. but so much else goes into that, it's not really fair to solely blame video games alone. what i want to know is, where the hell were the parents at, and why aren't we blaming them? it's columbine all over again - people want to point the finger at everything and everyone else other than the people who were directly responsible for this kid. this is why i hope to never have children, honestly. it's so sad.

I have an idea. Let's blame everything in the world except the ones that should be blamed. The parents. Video games and music DO NOT turn kids into violent killers. When Columbine happened they tried to blame Marilyn Manson and his music, and you know what? The kids didn't even listen to his music. People should look to the parents first and not to campy cartoon characters in a video game.

i read the story, theres nothing stating he played violent video games , but that he did like to play airsoft and shoot guns

if your going to blame anything blame the parents for not paying attention.

Games have ratings for a reason and if you dont think your kid can handle the damn game then dont buy it..

This thread needs to be closed before flaming ensues

I blame the person who did it, not games, nor the parents. Do we blame the ongoing war for anything? Or what about rival gangs that are always killing each other and all the other violence in the world? This has to be more about gun control and less about game control. Games are just that, games.. and are not training devices for massacres..

like 1 of our ego members said, they didnt learn to respect the weapon. really, in all honesty, i do believe that violent video games MAY have played a part in it. i cant really say for sure it was indeed a part of the reason why. but part of it has to deal w/ the fact that theres no many cliches in schools. if young teens didnt make up these stupid "groups" in order to make themselves stand out from other in order to look cool, like the "preps" or the "goths" (just givin examples here), & people learned to respect & understand each other, not to mention that they would listen first & then speak, then there wouldnt be this crud happenin in schools. i remember when i was a soph in hs & the columbine shootings occured. i remember when i used to enjoy wearing black alot. at the time, i was alot like those kids. the difference was, they just couldnt understand the difference between real life & video games. video games is just an alternate reality for people to go to in order to escape the craziness of the world. unfortunately for some, either they dont grasp the difference or they dont care bout the difference & want to take care of issues within their heart due to emotional distress in their lives due to all the "cliches" in schools. also, if you do some research (like i did), ull notice that most of these stories end in the killer(s) committin suicide so that they dont have to do prison time & according to them "get away w/ something". well unfortunately, thats a lie that is told to them by the devil.

My opinion/guess as to the cause is to blame either the kid himself or no one at all. He's old enough to think for himself, either he made his own decisions or he was messed up in the head. His parents really probably don't have much to do with it. And on the subject of games being the cause, even if he did play violent games, again there was obviously something wrong with him to make him actually act on them.

Did video games have an effect? Sure! So did what he had for breakfast, the composition of oxygen in the air, his chemical state based on vitamin intake, the background noise of the evironment, and the bubbling and twisting of the quantum foam at the base of the universe.

The key is, which environmental effect had the MOST effect? In most cases: parents.

Y'all know I live in Texas. Out here we love our guns. But in many cases, kids learn of guns from their parents, who teach them to respect their firearm. Don't point it at something unless you plan on shooting it. Don't shoot it unless you plan on killing it. Ergo, don't play with the darn thing unless you're planning on using it to kill, and what you kill darn tootin' better have been trying to kill you or avoid you eating it!

In Dallas, the owner of a firing range kinda looked at me weird when I asked if they did training. The "shouldn't you have learned that from your Dad?" (Note: Dad and Mom are both California Hippies :D). The gun shop owner down here locally seemed surprised as well.

Here's the problem with firearms: In many places, they're feared. And the population plays ostridge: if I don't know about guns, guns won't know about me! They try to hide their guns from other people. And if you get somebody who uses their constitutional right to bear arms, and worse, uses their state protected right to carry the firearm in public... MUST BE A MASS MURDERER.

In a local city, Tyler, a crazy man got his hands on a gun and went to city hall a while back and started shooting people. The police were unable to get on the scene quick enough to stop the carnage. A regular citizen, with a Concealed Carry Permit and training on his firearm, pulled his gun and shot the gunman dead. Saved many lives. The police checked up to make sure the weapon wasn't used in a bad way, and the guy walked away. He had learned how to use his gun with respect.

But in most places, this training is never given. Kids don't learn about gun safety and respect until they've done gone to a school and opened fire.

So who's fault is it?

Gunmakers for providing the gun? 5%
Hip hop artists that make guns sound fun? 5%
FPS games that make miniguns funny? 5%
Parents who allow their son to have a gun? 40%
Parents who never teach their son to respect his weapon? 45%

Sure, everything has a little effect. But the main problem is parents expecting schools to raise their children, then getting shocked when their kids do something like this.

There is a problem with logic. How many people in this clan have an urge to go around shooting and sapping sentries? i think its a two factors; Mental Illness + Guns = Tradgady

That's terrible ...as i see there are alot of arguing about who and what caused this i also think that the parents are guilty to one point if he is closed and depressed all the time what can they do if he doesn't want to talk to them but I also think that his entire Environment caused this massacre maybe he was having mental problems why didn't anyone helped him the answer is that most of the people are too greedy to think for anyone but themselves if there was a little piece of humanity in anyone around him this could be stopped this is what is my opinion about the story. And about the video games and music turning people mad it's 50% true depends on the people when i listen something like Death Metal i just wanna punch or brake something and for the video games they cause mental problems i have suffered the pain of loosing my best friend because of this machine we are using for fun everything happened because he had like 10 friends max ! and he stopped talking with us because he started to sit on the computer for over than 8 hours a day he stopped going to school also and got expelled so don't use to PC too much or u will loose your life!

I'm definitely not trying to argue with you who did what, I think you make great points, but I do think his parents tried to teach him about guns, considering it said they went to a marksmans club, and I believe it said they practiced airsoft in the basement. Also, I thought Germany had pretty strict gun laws (but I could be wrong), so I doubt his parents had much to do with him having access to a gun to go on a crazed killing spree, unless he got his problems from them.

I also noticed he shot someone at a psychiatric clinic. I assume he knew this person.

On a lighter note, next time a war is won, I'm blaming violent video games :D

What I find difficult to understand is that people are always putting a blame on something or someone...

Especially when it's "violent games"

I myself hold a medieval weapon arsenal about... 3 steps away from me, containing everything from longswords to rapiers, to crossbows, I have played the maybe MOST violent game out there "Postal" yet I don't even have the slighest idea to go forth and kill real people.
It makes me rather sad that people always tend to try and blame either; Video games, films or even more populair Sub-Cultures *cough* goth music *cough*

What goes around in a killer's mind, who knows?

But never ever go throw arround accusations.

There, I've done my say. ^^
