Going to be gone threads. An elegant alternative.

I saw something great today.

Instead of posting a thread in the forum saying that they were going to be gone for two weeks to visit their Great Aunt Ermagarde one of our members put an appendix on their signature saying that they were going to be gone and returning at such and such a date.

This is great. Anyone who looks at their posts or their public profile page can see where they're at. Also, they didn't clutter up the forums with threads that will just scroll off to the next page in two days time leaving people to wonder where they have gone.

When they get back from their sabbatical they'll remove the extra line of text from their signature and no muss no fuss life goes on.

What a great idea!

That's a very good idea.

I've seen another forum with "vacation mode", where you simply put in how long you'll be away for. It then displays a little palm tree icon next to your name to show that you're going to be away, and auto-responds to PMs with a short one saying "I will be away until XX/XX/XXXX".
