What scripts do you all use?

My only script:

taunt; wait 350; explode

Then use it when playing as heavy, at the end of the round or in front of a teammate with the sandvich out.

OHM NOM NOM NOMNO-OHH NO!-splode!

Don't eat those sandviches so fast! LOLOLOLol..lol

A while back I tried to use scripts, but except or special effects (Panic Button, Sandvich Explode) I just use muscle memory.

I've got a Cyborg Command Unit:

cyborg-unit1.jpg

1-4 select weapons. When playing as spah, you see little button 21 down there? Hit that with the heel of your hand, and 1-4 become 5-8, so picking a disguise is one keystroke away. So I can't disguise as spah without a little more work.

And the little joystick is mapped to WASD, for movement.

Once I got good with my gamepad, I just couldn't see any reason to build scripts :D

i have no problem with scripts for changing weapons, however any script that lets you execute more than one button push with a single command = cheating
learn to play the game as its meant to be played without a crutch

You say that as though scripts are some kind of illegal hack. Valve made it possible for them to be used, so how can you really call them cheating? Can I just call spies who backstab me alot cheaters because I don't like them? 'cause it sounds like a lot of people are just calling scripts cheating because they don't like them.

I'm not calling you out, Vainiac, you're perfectly entitled to your opinion. I just want to know where this attitude comes from and why people just have this idea that scripting is the same as hacking. Aimbots, speed hacks, wall hacks, that's cheating. Scripting is just taking advantage of a feature the game developer put in.

Scripts don't allow you to do anything you couldn't do with individual keys, and they don't allow you to do it any faster, any better, etc. They just let you do it SIMPLER. Like I said earlier, they make it so you're fighting only the enemy, not a control scheme.

Scripting usually make gives the player an advantage over a different player who doesn't use scripts. While tinkering it down so that you can perform multiple actions with less key strokes isn't cheating nor illegal it still is having a program doing the work for you.Having an auto reload script might make it simpler for you truth is during battle a soldier might not always reload and die because of not having that 1 extra rocket, but the scripting one is always reloading without any thought of hitting reload.

Therefore having it negates the human error in the game and can give between a minor advantage to a major one.

Yes, of course there's an advantage to scripts. Otherwise people wouldn't use them. But, it's not anything I'd call unfair. Valve is pretty strict when it comes to handling cheaters and exploiters, check the TF2 blog. If they allow it, then I think it's safe to say that they believe everything is working as intended.

Ditto!

Well said Servo.

I wonder if any of the script=cheat people use r_netgraph? Wouldn't that be cheating? Especially if you use the feedback from netgraph to adjust your rate, eliminate lag, and optimize your ping? Doesn't that give you an advantage over players who don't use netgraph? I'm not accusing anyone of cheating here, I'm just trying to understand the mindset that thinks script=cheat.

Taken to it's logical extension, in order to not cheat by using scripts, one should delete all the .cfg files then start the game and type "unbind all" in console. (Please do not do this). Also, anyone who uses a mouse to play is scripting. As far as we have come, the Source engine still uses a version of the Quake console commands. Quake was set up for keyboard-only play as the default. If I remember right WSAD moved and ;.,/ looked around. If you wanted a mouse you had to check a box in the Options screen. This set "+mlook". HL2 has the same variable except you can no longer un-mouse it via the options menu.

Please understand that I'm not trying to start a flamewar over the scripting=cheating query. I'm just curious of the thought processes behind this stance. Does it come from a misunderstanding or ignorance of what scripting is: "I don't understand these console commands but I think people who do can do some amazing and unfair things with them"? Or is there someone who understands console and thinks it is cheating? If it is the latter, I would love to hear from you. Not to debate you but because all I have ever heard bad about scripting has come from ignorance. So if someone has an informed thesis about how scripting is legal cheating (and we won't debate the semantics of that statement), I'd love to add it to my accumulated knowledge (very Borg of me I know). :D

I forgot to post this: I (now) use cl_interp .01. Your pipe bombs, stickies, and rockets will launch faster. Though I don't notice any major differences.

To those of you who aren't getting self-righteous over the simple idea of tying different commands together under non-standard key bindings, these are the only ones worth using in my experience:
- Rocket Jump
- Crouch Jump
- Fast Melee Switch
But mind you, it's not all that hard to do the jumps on your own, though, and the lastweapon key (Q by default) does a fair to excellent job of the same thing if you use it right. If you're going to spend time playing with aliases, you might as well just spend that time flipping burgers part time and buy a better graphics card. :)

edit...
Please understand that I'm not trying to start a flamewar over the scripting=cheating query.

Yeah, good luck with that.

;http://www.caleague.com/?division=tf2Scripting rules have changed for this season; it is no longer illegal to script more than one action to a single key. This does not mean we approve of any kind of exploiting through scripting. Currently the only script that is illegal for use in CAL match play is the Jump/Duck exploit, below is a detailed definition of this script.

Jump/Duck Exploiting Script: (illegal)
Extremely fast rapid head bobbing in which you don't lose speed while moving. It looks like your model's top half is flashing in two different locations at once and it can be used as a sniper deterrent for any class.

Basic jump/duck scripts are legal, for example the following:
alias +rocketjump "+jump;+duck;wait;+attack"
alias -rocketjump "-jump;-attack;wait;wait;wait;-duck"
bind mouse2 "+rocketjump"

Well if competitive game play allows it i change my opinion. (this was posted Feb 18 09)

I don't have any problem with them, but I don't use any (taunt-explode and panic button sound fun, though). I tend to do the panic button action manually anyway as a pyro XD

@ Idol - Ha, you know what your post made me think of...

If people who are anti-script want everyone to have a perfectly level playing field, that would mean a few things... Everyone has the same hardware (processor, video card, HDD, RAM, all of it), the same controller hardware, and, with minor rebinding issues not included, the same control scheme.

In short, they want console systems and console games! ^_^

Not necesserily. I have 180 ping on most eGO servers. I don't complain cos the only time it's harder to hit people is when I'm sniper. And it doesn't matter what hardware you use.

Lemme put it this way. Say you work in an office where you have to fill out forms on the computer for some things. And your collegue has set up some binds to get the forms filled out quicker. He'd get his work done quicker than you, get more done etc. I think I'd be pretty annoyed at that, seeing he has an advantage over you to do something.

that is the best way to put it imo. Midget may have more skill in filling out the forms, but the other guy uses a script to do it faster.

The ONLY script I have ever considered using is the reload script. for some reason I forget/have trouble pressing r fast enough, and as a soldier, reloading is VERY important.

I don't use it though, would make me feel dirty. dirty like a demo on warpath.

I was just being facetious with my console example. As far as the office work, hey, if the boss doesn't say it's against the rules to fill out forms with binds, wouldn't you say that the second worker is just working smarter than you and taking advantage of all his resources? And if you really are better than him, you can do one of two things: 1.) Not use scripts if you choose not to, which is perfectly okay, and be not as good as that player, 2.) Adopt some scripts and see if they can help further improve your game so you can truly outclass all those players who aren't as skillful as you but maybe have scripts boosting them a bit.

And for the record, I believe no script exists that makes one good player and one significantly worse player suddenly look like they have the same skill. Anyone who plays knows most of the game is knowing where to be, how to move, how to approach a situation (or when to avoid it altogether). No script can give you good judgment and decision making. How many kills do you honestly think a quick weapon switch script gets someone? I'd say a fraction of a fraction of a percent increase, if any. It's more about convenience and simplicity than anything else, as a script won't do anything you can't do without it. Not like you can run a +100 HP, Aimbot Wallhack script. You run one that helps you reload or switch weapons or crouch jump, stuff that you may have to battle with the controls to do. Remember, not everyone is some uber-coordinated 1337 gamer, not everyone can flick their left hand and hit 9 buttons to do everything they want. Fight the enemy, not the keyboard control scheme.

this really doesnt make any sence (no offence midget31394) seeing as you could also use scripts yet choose not to. Its like saying Im going to give 2 people a chance to win a race...you choose to walk and the other chooses to run and then you complain about losing because you didnt want to run.

No, Its mainly saying I have more skill and can do the work while the other person is being (lazyer?) by just pushing buttons, to do some things.

Correct me if I'm wrong, midget, but we're all just hitting buttons to do things. Why are you assuming that because someone uses scripts that means they can't do manually what the script is helping them with? And why assume that superiority that because you don't use them, you are somehow a better player? No offense, but it's kind of an arrogant attitude.

By calling scripters lazy and less skilled than those who don't use scripts, you're really insulting a significant portion of our membership and pub users.

If an admin is around, it'd be great if you could close this thread. It's obviously migrated far from its original intent, and I doubt anything constructive will come from this current discussion. Thanks!

Oh then you don't know all scripts. There are some nasty scripts out there that do things faster AND better while being a whole lot simpler. I won't post the script but an example for a "scripted cheat" is the pistol script that gets more popular lately. Shooting a whole pistol clip in less than a second is obviously a huge advantage. You do it faster than any human could (Tell me, how can you possibly hit a button twelve times in 0.5 seconds?) and, of course, it's also a lot better than a person not using the script since you're going to hit with 12/12 shots for sure.
Some scripts are just mean, I won't tolerate them. Fun scripts like the ones AutoDMC posted are fine to me or scripts that help you disguise (which is next to no advantage), too. Scripts that give you an advantage than a vanilla TF2 player are a big no-no in my eyes. Doing a perfect rocketjump all the time is kind of pushing it...
