Added Multicore Rendering

This initial release is aimed at testing compatibility, so the option is OFF by default

To turn it on, go to the Options->Video->Advanced dialog, and check the "Multicore Rendering" option

Other Changes

Several performance improvements to decals and client bone/flex setup

A variety of alt-tab and mode switch fixes

Improvements to the way the engine initializes surround sound, fixing some specific hardware cases

Fixed a crash on exit in Vista 64

This glorious message brought to you by the wonderful Valve on 3/18.

omgomgomgomg

Finally my quad-core will go to more use, was starting to get depressed with all the games not utilizing it.

It is actually pretty excellent. I jumped up from 100 fps to around 300 fps.

The problem is that it also has a penchant for crashing...as I've already done.

I enabled it, but I didn't see any increase in FPS. They did say it was for testing, so I'll accept it not really working right now. I'm just glad it is actually happening.

It increases my FPS by a significant amount, but it just randomly crashed.

OMG

your post has just made my day. Just as Cutchem!st said, my quad-core will also finally have a use beyond 3d renders and multithreaded distributed computing projects. :D

So, does it just use 2 cores, or all available cores? And how often are you guys experiencing crashes? Once every X minutes.... Trying to get an idea of how much it could potentially increase performance, vs. how often it crashes.

You guys should post your specs, performance increase (if any), and how often you experience crashes or instability.

All avaliable cores according to my G15 keyboard core monitor. The crashes seems to be spacing out between eachother, and people without it on are crashing. I've been going for like 30 minutes for each crash now.

My Speccs:
Q6600 Quad-core 2.4ghz OC'd to 3.0 ghz
8800 GTS 512
4Gigs DDR3 Ram

Vista 64 bit

All my settings are on the highest possible, vertical sync off

Used to be getting about 95 fps in very heavy combat now im getting like 150ish

Your results may very though, test it out on your own machine. I also believe if you have a dual core it will be less of a increase in performance then a quad-core with it turned on.

Works fine for me. Went from ~30 to ~90 FPS. No crashes.

How long in one server have you been playing though? Becuase im finding I wont crash for a pretty long period of time, then everyone in the server crashes in a wave of people.

Just got back from a week vacation from Chicago. Came on my computer to finally get my TF2 fix and the game keeps crashing. Yargg!

Are people noticing instability with multicore support turned off? Maybe they borked TF2 as a whole, and not just the multicore support, in which case the support may not be all that bad once TF2 gets fixed, if you follow me.

/can't try anything for myself, no computer yet, relying on you all for input

I'm crashing as well, and multi-core rendering is OFF. I keep getting the endless sound looping at random intervals with no foreshadowing to the event (i.e no lag spikes or jumpiness in the game before it happens), which is weird because normally my game acts up right before it crashes.

All I know is it makes me angry. I just got a brand new router I was hoping to test out tonight.
