router trouble

I got this Linksys router that randomly just cuts off. I dont mean shutting off but I wont be able to surf the internet, like no connection

Its random but usually happends when I'm downloading and searching the web at the same time. Or if my dad(on the other computer) is surfing the web as well.

I have pin pointed the problem. When the router cuts off, it wont send packets from my network to the internet. This is how I know this. Quite a few times has it happend when I would be in a game. All of a sudden my guy freezes and I'm not able to move, While everyone around me is talking, moving and lol having a great time. Therefor packets are still going into my network

If I unplug and replug the power to the router, the problem is fixed and I can continue to surf the web and frag people.


I'm tired of rebooting my router. Its a pain.

I had the same problem, I called up comcast and they gave me a new router for free. So if you bought it from Comcast you might want to call them up, see if you get lucky

nope. I have a company that probly non of you are familier with. I have wireless DSL, Which has my router connected to a antenna on my roof which is pointed at a tower and connects to DSL and is a tad bit slower than DSL

Question would be, how FAST is your net?
Wireless has the tendency to pick up waves from our devices that cause interfrence and crashes a lot of wireless.

In my case, my microwave has sensors that effect mines when turned on.

In your case, your father d/ling and with constent interfrence from the antenna being on the roof would be the cause.

I'm paying for 800 kbps. but rreally we never get that fast so about 500. I guess that would be the case, but it doesnt make sense that it would effect the router.

Let me guess, Internet America? I live in South Texas also. And that's what I have. The problem with the wireless antenna on your roof is that if it is not pointing directly at their antenna or if theres something obstructing its view, you will not receive a signal properly. If that isn't the problem, the antenna on the roof could be fried.

You should check the router.. Some IT stores allow you borrow routers for testing IF you provide them your ID so they can be calling you back, if you're not returning the product soon enough.
I had similar problems with a TeleWell 501 router in phone-line ADSL and as soon as I changed to a Zyxel box, the problem disappeared.

Hmm. I had a similar problem happen to me a while back. You say you're downloading something? I know anything uTorrent tried downloading killed my router (same situation as you) and I would have to reset everything. Also Limewire messed with it. A change of routers solved the problem, so I'm sorry I can't offer any decent advice for you.

I've been moving away from Linksys (and Cisco) in favor of DLink. Those guys are just overpriced and underpowered...

But I do also agree with 3NiGmAx

Wireless does sometimes pick up waves and it interferes.
It as well could be that your anntenna could be fried.

Gimme your servive provider and the brand of your stuff I'll do some reserch.

Linksys routers are infamous for this type of slow rot*. I've never had one last more than a year or so in constant operation. You can try searching for replacement firmware if your model supports firmware upgrades. Power cycling is another option, as you said you're already doing. I strongly suggest buying a SOHO router, they might be more expensive but they're generally quite stable. You can also look for another brand.

*I have suspicions that the problem has to do with MAC address caching, once the cache fills up it won't form new outbound connections. Not much that can be done about it though.
