hi, i am new to this board and server and i hope someone can help me out.
I followed the tips i've seen on the forum for optimizing gameplay. So far so good, but i still have some fps drop issues. Normaly i habe around 100-125 fps, but it drops sometimes into 30fps. ??? Usually if there is a lot of people, i think.
What can it be?
My comp is a selfbuild one. I have Q6600 cpu (2.4Ghz), 4GB ram and a evga 8800 GT 1GB.
In the game i reduced or disabled almost everything, except the textures. My gameresolution is 1440x900.
Btw, i do not have a soundcard, just onboard. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any input. :)

For starters, what game are you trying to play? EdgeGamers encompasses quite a few games, and narrowing it down will better help me help you.

Do you use YuuGuu? If you do, I'd be glad to have a look for you.

--EDIT--
Yes, having a sound card does make a difference, but the most I've ever gained is a mere 3 FPS.

are you running background programs? try disabling your antivirus while playing? i would try those, lol cause if i am doing something like that my fps will drop with alot of people ingame :)

Is your processor/gfx-card overheating? That could and most likely is it.
Use Speedfan / Everest to check the temps when the fps drops.

Call of Duty 4

This guide is only on the commands that will improve visibility, registration, and smoothness of the game. All these commands are used through console.

Press ~ to open console (Press ctrl~ to open console full screen)

FPS
Frame rate is really important in any shooter game. The higher the frame rate, the smoother the gameplay and the quicker you are able to see people. You want to have either a constant 125 or 250. It's really hard to play with 60 fps.

There are 2 specific values when setting your maximum framerate.

/Com_MaxFPS 125

This maximum value is used by majority of the people. When you have a constant 125 fps you are able to see people much quicker than someone with 60 fps. It will also make able to jump higher. Most important, your game will feel smooth and you won't be skipping around when shooting someone.

/Com_MaxFPS 250
This is the less often used one. Mostly because people can not maintain a constant 250. There's really only 1 difference between 125 and 250. With 250 the recoil on guns is a tiny bit less than when having 125 fps. It's to small of a difference to notice in my opinion.

Here are some tips to improve that frame rate:

Graphics Menu in-game:

Video Mode = Use native screen resolution for your monitor.

If your hardware cannot handle this resolution, set it lower and check out the resulting change in frame rate.

Anti Aliasing = Off

Sync Every Frame = Off

Dual Video Cards = No (unless you SLI)

Specular Map = No

Depth of Field = No

Glow = No

Dynamic Lights = No

Smoked Edges = No

Ragdoll = No (yes if you want to see funny bodies)

Bullet Impact = No

Model Detail = Normal (PB kicks for low in most servers)

Water Detail = Low

Rates
These commands will improve the smoothness of the game and help out with bullet registration.

/Cl_MaxPackets 100
This is a key command. Max Packets is the amount of data you send to the server per second. The higher you make this, the more data you send. So if you set it to 100, your bullet registration will increase, but it will also increase the registration for others. (If your connection is slow set this to 63, because 100 will just create lag for you)

/Rate 25000
This just sets the speed you are connected to the server. The higher the number the faster your connection will be.

/Snaps 30
This is the number of snapshots you receive from server every second. So the higher the number the more data you receive. 30 is the highest amount most servers allow. If you have a slow connection, you should lower it.

Visual
These commands are so you are able to spot enemy players more easily. The downside is the graphics will look worse than high settings.

/r_drawdecals 0
This command will get rid of the junk you see on streets and walls. It will make it easier to see people.

/cg_fov 80
This will increase the amount you are able to see at the edges of your screen. See how in the FOV 65 pic you can't see the entrance from B alley, but with FOV 80 you can see it clearly.

/r_dof_enable 0
This will disable the blur around your sights when you are sighted in making it easier to follow people while shooting. Notice the blur on the gold ak. The blur is also around the sights of gun.

/r_gamma
There is no set number for this, but you want to have it atleast 1+. This is just brightness, and it will be easier to see people in dark corners like on vacant.

Mouse Sensitivity
This is all personal preference. If you are a player that sits back and tries to get long range shots your sensitivity should be low. If you are close combat, you should have it a bit higher. All in all, the lower the better, just make sure you can atleast make a 180. I have it set to 1.3, but I also have 2000dpi. So if you have a non-gaming mouse you should set it higher.

i would also agree thinking it would be an overheating issue. so maybe describe when it happens, like after 3 hrs of gameplay or so?? if you just reboot your comp, does it restart and you can play for another 3 hrs or whatever?

Howdy,

ok, i need to clarify this a little.
I play CoD4 and it happens mostly after awhile. Its like random.
Thats said, it will stabilize later on again. As far as heating, this card is the one with the big heater. There were two versions of the same card, one with a thin fan and the other with much bigger. So i think its not really a heating issue, especially since it is not persitant.
These console command i hacked already in. And i turned off pretty much most of the goodies, which is sad.
As far as background tasks...mmm.. there are some, but they are mostly idle. My antivirus i really dont want to turn off, but i will try it out anyway just to see if that helps.
I think my mainissue is really that i get such a hudge fps drop. I would be fine with 30 frames or so, but over half of the frames is strange. Or maybe i am just piggy.

Thanks already for the help;)

Apart from checking temperatures, you may also want to try watching what your system is doing. I suggest going to www.sysinternals.com and downloading 2 programs: Autoruns and Process Explorer.

First run Autoruns and turn off unneeded programs on startup. This will free up memory and CPU time. Though you have plenty of RAM, excess processes running in the background may be causing flushing RAM to disk... doubtful, but worth a check.

If you can, run CoD4 in windowed mode while running Process Explorer. Watch CPU usage on different applications. When you get slowdown, try to see if any process is pegging the CPU or memory usage.

Lastly, just check to make sure that the fan and heatsink on both your GPU and CPU are clear of dust which may be allowing excess heat buildup.
