Is there anyway there can be an auto lock on threads that reach page 3?

This would solve bumping old threads... quite annoying seriously lol

I certainly agree with this as a plausible idea, if a thread needs resurrecting with good purpose then anyone Advisor or above can unlock it.

Although, I seem to remember there was a post about how it helped weed out the less mature community members and/or the oens that cannot follow rules well.

A lot of threads go past 3 pages and still have meaning. If someone bumps up a old thread, pm me and I will lock it.

what about if a thread that has not had a post in 1-2 months get an autolock?

yah that would work...but is it worth the trouble???

so far i have NEVER locked a thread that was bumped up and it was old....it happens very little... so its not really worth the trouble.

Also look at things like "Post yourself" "Rate the Above users sig" all have alot of pages but yeah or maybe an auto delete on all threads older than 6 months

Both of these that you mention are stickied. Perhaps it could be made not to affect stickied threads.

Just saw something... e Mpty probably meant threads that had gone past page 3 of thread listings, whereas 'vote for pedro' was referring to threads that had gone past page 3, of that thread.

I think that an auto-lock for threads that are bumped further than 3 pages of thread history would be a good idea. I doubt that many people read that far into thread history, and they are most definitely not in common discussion anymore. This would also prevent trolls from bumping up old threads at all.

that means it would autolock popular threads that reach 3 pages

it would be better if it autolocked a thread that was X months old

Capping a thread at three pages would be a terrible nuisance and not very user friendly. It would without a doubt give the forums an oppressive feeling. Furthermore, if a post in an old thread is a legitimate continuation of a discussion the original post date is irrelevant. The age of a thread does not necessarily change its value to the community.

I'd have to disagree with that. Thread goes past page 3 no longer needed and would'nt be oppressive if the thread is already 3 weeks to a year old and no one has responded why not lock it?

Either way, old threads that get bumped will get locked with or without auto lock, only this way is hassle free.

If someone could clean your house and cut your lawn for free and at no trouble to you would you allow this person to do this for you?

Auto Lock would be just another convenient, hassle free way of dealing with old threads that one person decides to bump for no reason but to say "ah that's cool" or "LOL thats funny" etc etc

Most of the time an old "dead" thread is bumped by a person who had nothing meaningful to say but "lol" or some thing down that line.

Sure its not hard locking those old pesky threads, with a few clicks of the botton its locked done, but this way. One time set up then never have to worry about it again :)

Either way like I said before with or without auto lock old threads will get locked when someone bumps it up to say something meaningless.

My 2 cents on the subject, that is all I have to suggest :)

By what criteria is a thread no longer useful after three pages? What about a trouble shooting thread in tech help? The problem hasn't been worked out in three pages but progress is made, the member hits the cap and has to create a new thread? That creates redundant thread contributing to forum clutter. What if the members are enjoying a topic of conversation but have the prospect of it only lasting three pages hanging over their heads? That's not a very welcoming feeling and once again if they want to continue the conversation they have to create another three page thread and more clutter of duplicate threads.

If you believe threads no longer have any value whatsoever after three weeks why not just delete them after said time span? You don't do that because you want to leave them so others can read them in the future if they want. If you want them to be able to read them why do you not want them to be able to participate in them? Setting arbitrary limits because one deems all topics valueless after a period of time creates an inhospitable environment in a service that's whole purpose is hospitality and enjoyment. I'll also go as far as to say that I know of no forum community that locks threads after a certain page limit. I believe there might be some underlying reason to that even if nobody has ever vocalized it.

I am a senior staff member and forum moderator in a community as large or larger than this one, which I helped grow over the years from a handful of members to its present size. So I do think about these things on a daily basis. However, I respect what the site administrators have done here and I'm sure that whatever is decided will be in the best interest of the community.

I have made my suggestion, ultimatly it is councils desion on weither or not to do it.

Btw p3 or 5 or 8 does'nt matter, it was a "suggestion" and if they chose to do it they'd decide that number not me so don't get hooked on the "lock on page 3" It was a suggestion not a debate.

locking this thread before this gets out of hand.

e MpTy is right....he just wanted to make a suggestion. Nothing more. No need to argue about.

I know a lot of leadership has seen this and we will make a decision either way.

:)

vB can lock threads after X amount of inactivity, also, the forums may be set to only display threads newer than Y date. To access older threads you can go to the Archive or use the search feature and specify "search all threads"

This is possible w/ vB, but is the call of the webdev team and/or the community managers.
