Some downloads are made available only after users have validated their versions of Microsoft Windows. Firefox and Netscape Navigator browser users may install a helper program, the Windows Genuine Advantage plug-in, to enhance their download experience."
and hit download plug-in, fire fox loads page then this pops up
"Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

Use IE to download anything from Microsoft. Microsoft specifically codes everything to work with their own products. Do not use Firefox to update anything in Windows or you run the risk of things going wrong. I suggest you run IE7 or the new IE8 to download Microsoft product related objects. Do not use IE6 or lower.

Do not try to use an online virus scanner because your problem is with the browsers itself. Download AVG 8.5, update it, boot into save mode and scan your computer. If nothing found, download Spybot search and destroy, update, and scan. If that doesn't find anything, download malware bytes, update and then scan.

If none of the above work, I suggest backing up all things you need and then reinstall your OS.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click the feed you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)

Click Tools , and then click Work Offline.
Click the Favorites Center button , click History, and then click the page you want to view.

thats what pops up when i try to download anything from the microsoft websight

Yeah you have spyware that is taking over your browser. These types of malware can prohibit you from downloading or viewing any webpage they want in many different manners.

1. Check your HOSTS file for microsoft.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

2. Reset your IE browser to the default settings.

3. Clear any microsoft.com site listed in the Tools>Internet Options>Security Tab>Restricted sites

and
Tools>Internet Options>Privacy Tab>Sites

and
Tools>Internet Options>Privacy Tab>Popup Blocker Settings

4. Spybot adds bad sites to all 3 of these listings plus the hosts file. The official microsoft.com site will never be added to these lists by Spybot. Only walware/spyware will do this.

5. Download my previous suggestions through Firefox if firefox is allowing you to go to these pages.

6. If none of these works. Back up what you need and zero wipe the drive using my guide. Then reinstall your OS.

If you've got a trojan you're going to need to run a virus and spyware scan of your computer. Maximum has a GREAT guide to cleaning up malware, so I won't re-write all of their suggestions. Head over there and try that.

Next, get yourself a good virus scanner and update it, then run a scan IN SAFE MODE.

If all of that fails then you may need to reformat and reinstall your OS...writing zeros to the drive really isn't necessary for a virus problem, but you can choose do to that if you'd like. Just make sure that is your very last option - almost any virus or malware problem can be cleaned up with enough effort.
