Hi, I am considering upgrading to an LCD monitor, and I have heard that if you use game with a monitor with higher than 2 millisecond response time that you can get shadow on the screen. Is this true or is it just hype?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

2ms is supreme, 5ms is fine, you might notice very insignificant ghosting, but it's difficult to notice. 8ms is where you'd generally start to encounter visible ghosting. In my past experiences anyway.

I have a 5ms monitor and it works wonderfully. I can't tell the difference between the two.

To be honest now a days, Manufacturers smudge those numbers. Sometimes the 2ms isn't REAL 2ms... Best thing is, see it for yourself in person, or watch/read reviews about the monitor you'll looking to buy. Cnet.com has always been pretty straight forward about whats good or not without playing favorites. :)

yeah i switched out from an old dell montior( dont even know its ms anymore) But i dont notice any ghosting issues between it and my new 26" LCD. Just the brightness and clearity.

mines a dell 19 inch and i love it, so awesome i've been using it for a year now, when i got it i was like i hope this thing works nice & it does.

Love it, perfect for gaming too less than 200 dollors at walmart :P

my monitor pwns :D all it cost me was 400$ Cnd with 100 in shipping and its only a 22 inch but i LOVE it. if you wanna know what it is google Asus PG221 :D i love it

I went from a 5ms 24" Acer LCD to a 2ms 24" Asus MK241H LCD. The difference in clarity is supurb (The Asus monitor has absolutely amazing color reporduction.) As for ghosting, I really didn't notice any on my 24" Acer, and there's definitely none on my 24" Asus.

As far as hype goes, 2ms is the holy grail of LCD technology, but 5ms isn't bad at all. If money's tight, you'll be plenty happy with a good 5ms LCD. If not, 2ms will keep you grinning like a giddy little school girl. :P

Here's a link to the Asus monitor @ newegg. It's $270 shipped (free shipping), which in my opinion, is an absolute steal for this quality!

Enjoy! :)

the ms rating manufacturers give you are smudged, i might have a 2ms response time for a certain color and a 18ms response for a different color. key to buying a good monitor is picking the right brand, stick with Samsung/Viewsonic/HP for good quality and Acer/Hanns-G for good value.

Dell monitors used to be sourced from Viewsonic, not sure who makes them now so do your research on dell before buying their monitors.

Hey Lumpy - you've seen my monitor - a HannsG HW223D, 22", 5ms....what did you think? I don't notice anything smearing (and this is from an old gamer - like you, who is used to the old 15"-17" crt type!). And the nice thing too, it's not all that expensive.

If you have a large monitor that has a low response time (i.e. 2ms or less) you can get inverse ghosting. This occurs when the manufacturer has to ramp up the voltage to get all of the crystals to change fast enough. If they ramp the voltage up too much then the pixels will "overshoot" their target color. This results in a clear shadow of the opposite color behind the moving object. Just make sure to read reviews before you buy.

Mines a 20 inch Envision Monitar LCD... I think its about 5 ms Dont notice any difference between them

you wouldnt notice anything with 2ms, you might with 5ms but you would really have to look for it. anything 5 ms or lower is fine

I'm not sure that you mean by "anything", but you'd be hard pressed to find a 5ms monitor with inverse ghosting. That is a problem found in 2ms monitors.
