Use VirtualDub(CS:S I believe that thats what it is) to record vids, Ive been looking into this software and downloaded it to my comp...now I havent installed it ATM, but im interested in using it to record my vids with...seeing as FRAPS costs me FPS for some reason...so my questions to all those who use it are:

1) First off, how do you record with it.
2) How good is the vid afterwards (I hear the quality is very very good and not choppy like it is with FRAPS).
3) What are the settings that you use to get such great quality out of the software?
4) Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

For all those who...
are about to rock, we salute you!

Best way to make a good recording is to first play with demo recording on as it won't completely wreck your framerate. Then run the video recording stuff later on when you play the demo back.

yeah, I already know about this...I do this with FRAPS, I just wanted to know about the virtualDub program.

I use fraps, and its perfectly fine for me. It must be the way i record it.
I believe Vegas Pro 8.0 can directly import Valve demos. I might be wrong, haven't tried it myself yet.
And 8.0 does that! I have it, but i have never tried it! Ive always had to record with fraps, guess i need to try it *goes off to try it*.

I thought you needed a different software to record those demos and then be able to put them onto vegas...hrmmm...need to look into that.

Capturing the video....? Well there are 3 methods i know of.

1) Fraps if you can maintain 30 fps at all times (my comp can)
2) Built in video renderer of source games.
"Try using "record demoname" in console, then once its done type "startmovie moviename avi" and choose Xvid compression, then type "play demoname" and wait a long time for the vid to do its job."

OH also, digging around the [ESG] forums....

As for editing... Really anything works, as long as it's not grotesquely over-edited. It depends on the type of music you use as well. I'd suggest minimal transitions or no transitions at all (can't stand those dreamy, shattery transitions that take 5 seconds to complete). I usually do my editing around my music selection. If you're watching it and its not producing the effect you want, name what effect you want and I can name some simple suggestions to make it more feasible.

Personally, i have never used the ingame moviemaker, but im going to now, to test weather it works for me.

ive done this, with the Xvid, but It comes out choppy for me...almost like its tearing(forgot what its called)...and when I run FRAPS, while im running it the FPS drop to almost 15 and I have to compensate for it by running the demo a bit faster...sigh, Ill have to figure it out...one more thing zaw, what FRAPS are you using, does it say FRAPS99 on it or what and what version is it?

Fraps v 2.9.6 build 7637, and the icon is a 99.

You must use these commands to prevent that.

First go windowed mode
Type sv_cheats 1
Type host_framerate 30

Now your videos will record at 30fps. When recording it sure doesnt seem that way, it's more like 5-15 fps, but when it's done and you view the actual file it is as smooth as the fps you set it at.

I believe that you can crank all your video settings, use host_framerate 30, and your video will play at 30fps even if your computer is not capable of playing at that well.

I tried this, except the sv_cheats 1...Ill go back and check it out and see how it is, thanks for the input guys I appreciate all the feedback.

How many fps do u use fraps at ( ill c wat version i have abd will edit wen i check )

I have it on 25 fps, but like i said when i get into the demo it says Ive got 60 fps, but as soon as I press record it drops to 15 and below at times.

This seems to have worked out well this time around, I just finished trying it again and all went smooth, thanks everyone for the info, I appreciate the help.

Fraps will always drop your framerate to 30 to do recordings.

I have done; [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNzh1Wu1qaw[/ame] and; [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dncd_Ig43tg[/ame] with fraps demo
