Account Protection

Below are just a few suggestions on how you can make sure that your account is protected from hackers or just from a general attack. Some of these will seem obvious others you may not be aware of. Remember you can do alot more than this and its just some suggestions.

• NEVER give your account password away
• If someone wants to add you too there friends list and you do not know them you may be happy to give them your steam user which in most cases is used for your username in steam, straight away they have your username. Instead tell them to search for your display name in the community and add you that way or when your ingame they could add you that way, remember there are alot of people out there which just want to cause harm.
• If you don't want to run the risk of loosing your account use a unique password un-like the ones you may use for FTP access to servers, ventrilo or forums. These days a forum won't take a experienced hacker long to get in even if its IP Board.
• Don't store passwords in .txt documents e.g. notepad. They can easily be access by a unauthorised user. Instead do the most secure method if you want to backup your passwords. Write in on piece of paper and place it in a draw then no person can hack into your computer and find it.
• Don't use silly short passwords e.g. qwerty, password, 1234321 and 911 these passwords are popular and the first any hacker will try. With a password try include a letter, number and if you can a capital letter, too make it even more secure place a special character in it, e.g %,?,$ and *.

Now some of these are very unlikley to happen to you unless you have personally annoyed someone who would like to harm you personally therefore they might do these sorts of things. Please remember if your more secure than another guy/ girls account then they will go for theres and not yours so always make sure you are the best secured.

let me refine that Christ, you do not place passwords like paypal etc or billing accounts however storing a steam account password on a piece of paper in a draw in your room is no problem, (unless you share a room with another person that you may not trust)

And christ explain why not because at the end of the day a hard copy does no one harm its twenty times more secure than it being on your computer.

unless they can hack your computer or implant a virus into your computer like the one on april fools, i highly doubt they will get your steam account. and even if they can get the worm into your computer, lets face it, they would be looking for more important things then your steam account.

and someone asking for your steam account name would be useless , because they would also go after your password if they did. if they have your steam account name and not the password, they would have to sit on their computer for days and try out trillions of combination or hit a lucky one which i highly doubt they would do.

they have grown smarter in a more incredibly dumb way of hacking other accounts. some still use the old ways of trying to be a "steam representative" to try and get your password, but many now use the more advance way.

one of which i got recently, people, if someone sends you a web link over steam, dont click it. they hack your steam account that way now. make sure it is indeed your friends, ask questions to make sure its them. i have a few buddies who have this happen to them already.
