XP Home vs Vista

When I bought my laptop it came with Vista, obviously, but when I was looking for my other computer's restore disks through my father's mountain of software, I found a couple XP Disks (he was a computer salesman), one was XP Pro, but did not come with any stickers/product keys, and a couple XP Home disks had a bunch of stickers with product keys, and I was wondering if it was worth it to reformat my laptop with XP Home instead of Vista.

It depends, what are your laptop's specs, and what version of Vista is installed...

im pretty sure its in like 2010 they will put it on long term support, means you can still get security updates but now bug updates.

i say stick with xp, more stable. if you like the look of vista you can theme xp to look like it. Also, try out windows 7 when it comes out in RC form; its freakin fast

Works fine for me once I costimized it.
 
Stay with 64bit Vista or go to 64bit Win7

XP 32bit not worth it
XP 64bit is junk
 
Windows 8 is coming out. From what I understand, it'll be like an improvement based on vista's visual appeal and Windows XP's functionality. I'm using XP, but I know several people that use free developers' applications to customize their Vista desktop.

Its really based on what you're looking for.
Do you know how to format a computer and install a new Operating System? Personally, I would wait for Windows 8 or try their beta version.
 
francium, dont u mean windows 7? i dont believe that microsoft has any plans for creating an 8th version of windows any time soon.
 
personally, I'd stick with XP, though you lose DX10, for gaming purposes, the xp machine is quicker and it won't eat a lot of system resources, especially since you are using a laptop (as they are notorious for not quite having the raw power of a desktop to begin with). I know that the vista has 64 bit, however most applications still won't use it fully, and the extra RAM allocation isn't really being utilized enough to justify the loss of appox. a gig to vista. If you had 6GB of ram, I'd say stay with the 64 bit vista, however for what that computer has in it, I still have to recommend XP, at least until MS cleans up their resource requirements.

Just my two cents for the day.

but, make sure your hardware supports it (mainly printers/network things). alot of manufacturers wont make drivers for 64 bit since its low market proliferation. Also, dont do it if you have 3 gigs or less of ram.
 
Hate to burst all the nay sayers for 64bit Vista but it is definitely BETTER! I jumped 250kbps download speeds when I upgraded. Since I have all of the versions of most of the OS's out there, I did testing on them and I only now use Vista Ultimate 64bit. Huge difference.

BUT! First, you need to really do some sole searching on "your" computer. What do you do, platform specific specs, future paths you want to take. If you are a gamer, upgrade or lag. I do spend too much money on my computers but it is offset by the money I make building them for peeps.

If your compter is really old, stick with what you have. If your computer is mid of the road, get an OEM version of Vista Ultimate 64bit from our eGOMall Newegg, If you have a newer computer just wait until Windows 7 comes out. I have the beta and it is great. Much better than Vista Home Premium (The curse words that come to mind with that version would make a Marine Blush). I have Vista Ultimate 64bit and anxiously waiting for Windows 7 to be released. If you need more specific answers just shoot me a PM with your comp specs and I will be glad to help.
 
Stay with Vista. It is rock solid and will run your software just fine.

W7 Beta, then W7. No point in buying an OS if a new one is coming out

Thats like saying "No point in buying a video card if a new one is coming out. There's always a new one coming out, so you'll just have to buy it at some point.

Ex:
I'm going to buy a 4850, actually I'll wait for the 4870.
I'm going to buy a 4870 actually I'll wait for the 4890.
I'm going to buy a 4890... Etc.
 
if you haven't uninstalled vista, try that out for a while and see how you like it. i personally like it better than xp, but i have been meaning to try out W7. try to back up you vista, and then try W7, and make a decision from there. don't stick w/ xp.
 
i personally like vista over xp. I just like the overall look of it and dx10.

Sorry to throw this in here but why not try linux? You could dual boot linux and vista.
 
i had vista on my laptop and i updated it and it fried my hard drive... just from a updatE!!!!!!
and ausus sucks more then dell, thats just from what i have experience and vista crashes so much more the XP, so if i were u and go XP :)
