As for what OS to use, I would just stick with Vista for a while. It's really not what most have made it out to be. I've been using it on my PC since the early Beta, and have never once crashed due to the OS. As it is, now it's even better than before – almost everything is compatible, and it's stable as can be. Honestly, I would never voluntarily switch back to XP...
If you are feeling a little more adventurous, however, I would grab a copy of the Windows 7 Beta. I've heard good things about it, but either way, you can't go wrong.
If you do change OS's, however, make sure you pull your vaild Vista Product Key before you do so. This key is encrypted into the registry (unless Asus was nice enough to give it to you, with the laptop), but you can easily retrieve it with a few open-source programs. That way, if you decide (for whatever reason) to go back to Vista, you'll have your already legally payed-for key to use in the install – you don't want to have to buy a new license because you lost the key, do you?
Here's a link to a program that can pull it for you:

Just download the latest build, and it will retrieve your legally owned key for you.
