XP Home vs Vista

Windows XP is all you need, and I've heard a lot of horror stories about vista but I mean, is it really so terrible that it makes you want to wait and spend like a gazillion dollars on windows 7?

Just to be clear here - Vista did not "fry" your hard drive. Something else may have happened or perhaps your drive failed coincidentally, but installing an OS on a drive will not destroy your hard drive. Just don't want the wrong ideas going out into the ether ;-)

Also thinking about cookies will fry your graphics card ;)

and ausus sucks more then dell, thats just from what i have experience and vista crashes so much more the XP, so if i were u and go XP :)

As for what OS to use, I would just stick with Vista for a while. It's really not what most have made it out to be. I've been using it on my PC since the early Beta, and have never once crashed due to the OS. As it is, now it's even better than before – almost everything is compatible, and it's stable as can be. Honestly, I would never voluntarily switch back to XP...

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, however, I would grab a copy of the Windows 7 Beta. I've heard good things about it, but either way, you can't go wrong.

If you do change OS's, however, make sure you pull your vaild Vista Product Key before you do so. This key is encrypted into the registry (unless Asus was nice enough to give it to you, with the laptop), but you can easily retrieve it with a few open-source programs. That way, if you decide (for whatever reason) to go back to Vista, you'll have your already legally payed-for key to use in the install – you don't want to have to buy a new license because you lost the key, do you? ;)

Honestly, I've had a better experience with Vista than I've had with XP. Though it may be because I'm using the 64bit version, I don't know.
 
I'm running on xp pro, and I've had no problems so far. Going to try to skip vista. I've heard lots of good things but also lots of complaints. Windows 7 should be an improvement.
 
Maybe XP... Then skip Vista, and go straight to Win7! I installed Vista because i wanted try it... It sucks for my comp (nVidia 8600GT, Intel E2200 @ 2.8ghz, 2gb RAM 800mhz (soon maybe 4-8gb), 1500GB hard drive) I have now Vista Ultimate 64bit and Ubuntu 8.10 on this comp. And second computer is Asus EEE PC 1000H with Windows XP (because of 160gb HDD), Linux version have only 16gb SSD(?). And my third comp have Xubuntu<3
 
if you have time and willing you can get the windows 7 beta and test it out, i like it
