Hard drive/Mobo Problems

My buddy is having some strange problems. I'm thinking his mobo is fried but it's brand new, so I'm hoping for some second opinions.

It goes like this:
One day he couldn't boot without clearing his CMOS. Research led to the belief that Windows Vista was to blame, but does not appear to be so.

So that remains to be.

Then he buys a 1TB HD, when he puts it in the drive, Windows runs slow as molasses and windows fails to detect it properly. It's detected fine in BIOS however. Attempting to install windows on the new drive fails for some unknown reason.

I put in the hard drive in my rig and the drive works totally fine.

Any insight to above problems?

A little more info is helpful, such as what kind of board is it, and what is happening when the Vista install "fails?"

This should really moved to the tech help forum.

woops, i actually meant to. if a mod could move it for me that would be sweet.

as for the mobo it's a msi x58 platinum.

when trying to install windows he says:
8:35 PM - -[cuRsive]-: it shows the hard drive, it shows the space as 958gb or whatever, but it's greyed out and has a little notice below it saying "windows cannot be installed on this hard drive" so i went to advanced, and selected it and hit format, but that didn't work

8:35 PM - -[cuRsive]-: it acts like it's not formatted, but i know it is
