Comp is freaking out!

I am having a new issue with any source game.

Issue: Game starts and appears to run fine for the first say 10 min. Then suddenly (seems when i fire or do some other multi system intensive function) I get a sound loop freeze and the color goes funky. Best I can describe it looks like a negative image. I then must ctrl-alt-del end hl2.exe to get back to desktop.

If I try and restart any source game the menu panel freezes with the same result as above. I have to completely restart the system to get back in a game. This is a new problem started last night.

Some history. I have had all kinds of conflicts when I built this box the most recent was bad ram. I replaced what I had with 2 new sticks and my BSOD problems disappeared. Last night the BSOD started again. It cited a NV4_XXXX.dll which is video driver so i reinstalled vid driver. BSOD again citing
DXG.sys directx thingy. Reinstalled directx. One more BSOD which i think was rundll32.exe that one is kinda confusing.

If anyone has any idea that isnt "my graphics card has died on me"....I would like to hear it.

Dual core 3.00 GHZ Intel
ASUS WIFI deluxe mobo
gforce 8800 GTS
4gig RAM

I tried to fix all this stuff and got the comp seemingly stable. So I started DOD:S BSOD before server selected even....NTFS.SYS was the error. Tried to restart and no dice comp BSOD on startup with a fatal error message. Eventually got to safe mode startup and basically did nothing. Shut down let it rest and now im back in....I am about to try to run a source game now but wanted to post first JIC.

WOW, OK THAT'S WEIRD, maybe go to a specialized place for this. Maybe there is some numbers missing in the binary code because it's really weird that you get a NTFS.SYS error. That's what I think but i'm really not sure.

yeah its BSODing all over the place now....IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL which is for RAM

im seeing a lot of NV4_DISP.dll which is video driver. what i dont get is it was stable and running great last week and the week before then out of the blue bam no source. DoD or INS.

been trying a lot of "solutions" well see.

Sounds like it could be a virus. What anti-virus program are you running? Try running Spybot Search & Destroy and see if that finds anything.

IRQ isn't a RAM error, it's for corrupted system file I believe. what it sounds like to me is that you have a bad sector on your hard drive which just happens to be right where a lot of your core system files are. this probably won't fix it but you may want to try a complete disk defrag, it may move your stuff out of the bad sector. probably won't, but can't hurt to try.

Actually I did a disk defrag after it happened the first time and the issue got even worse. So that fits with a dead area on my HD theory.

Problem is the comp seems to run fine just the games lock up. Apparently this problem has been around since like 2001 and all the forum stuff ive read nobody has a cut and dry solution. Lots of diff suggestions and fixes that dont seem to work. Some even suggest a hardware failure.....

Yeah those are some evil errors to have. last time i had those kind of errors i just reinstalled and reformated windows. fixed the problem but had to dump alot stuff that i could back up because of the errors.

NTFS.SYS isn't that the formatting of windows?
If the NTFS.SYS is corrupt you may have to format your HD...
I suggest opening your PC and have a look around, check your harddrives...
If this error keeps popping up take it to a specialist...
Should they want to format it, be sure to back everything up
Common sense but needs to be said...

Just checked, it is the formatting of your harddrive the NTFS...
Might be your harddrive and not windows
Is it a new HD or is it old?
If it is old that might be why...
Still a simple format could fix it...

it honestly sounds like a video card issue b/c of the negative images. try updating video card drivers, virus scanning, reinstalling the games and steam if neccessary.

Ok im posting here cause I think i found the problem. Or a solution?

Bottom line I pulled one of my 2 sticks of RAM and everything looks normal. Even played a little DoD for a bit and nothing seemed hinky. Kinda strange cause it did sound like all video stuff. Either way I appreciate the suggestions. Ill keep you posted.

Make sure ALL drivers are to update. I had a system do somthing like you are saying your is and i up-dated all drivers i could find a update for and i never had another issue with the system. You never know ... mite help ya... good look...
