I have a Gateway MX6453...and i have it set to a High Low settings (On AC HIGH Power....on Battery Low Power setting)....one day I noticed my light on the front was not illuminated which indicated charging......and i also noticed that the screen would flicker between a dim screen and bright screen.....i also noticed my ac adapter piece that plugs into the computer got extremely hot after 20 minutes of being plugged in.....so the problem is that i cant use my laptop anymore because the battery is not charging.......Does anyone know why or how to fix it?

Or your adapter is broken OR it has a bad connection.

It could also be your battery but I doubt .

Yeah - I would replace the adapter first. See if the connection is loose at the back, but if it looks normal then the adapter is probably fried.

How old is the battery? Sometimes batteries need to be replaced. But like they said check out the charger.

battery is less than 2 years old....everything is less than 2 years old....i tried using my stepdads ac adapter.....same exact computer.....it doesnt work...it still does same thing

With Li-Ion and Li-Poly batteries it is possible to over-discharge them. If you store the battery with no charge it may no longer work.

When you said:

Did you mean the wall adapter or the part you physically plug into the laptop?
Also, do you have any other device you can test the adapter on to make sure it works?

I mean the piece that goes into the laptop.....I have tried other ac adapters to get my laptop to charge.....it doesnt work....i tried my stepdads he has same computer.....and i even went and bought a universal charger....same thing nothing

Take out the battery completely and turn the computer on. See if it still gets hot with the charger plugged in.

Well if there is no battery and the computer will not turn on with the cord then it should be your charger, or the plug on the computer itself.

okay....how would i go about fixing it....i think i have narrowed it down to being something with the laptop....cuz i tried my ac adapter....my stepdads ac adapter....and a universal ac adapter.....same problem on all 3

My guess would be the connection on the laptop is damaged. You'll probably have to talk to the company. is it under warranty?

Look for burn marks on the female adapter. Smell it. Sometimes it comes loose and moves too much.

Ok. Time for pictures. Lets see how the power cord looks. Also Recount again in detail how you noticed the problem. The main thing is was this a sudden thing, or it ran of battery until it died, then would not charged? You said it turned on but that charge light would not show.

My understanding of the inner workings of a laptop is that the power coming from the wall just charges the battery. So if you took out the battery the laptop wouldn't even start. So that^ is a good sign. EDIT: Apparently not.

However this could be a good test...

Case 1: If the connection attached to the computer (round plug, not the big box thing) still gets hot with no battery in the laptop, then it sounds to me like there is a short in the connector. This may mean that you need to take it in for repair.

Case 2: If it the round plug doesn't get hot with the battery out, then your battery is probably dead/over-discharged. You would need a new battery for ~$100.

Note: The box thing on the cord should get warm in both tests as it is converting AC power.

When my laptop worked It would run on AC Power without the battery being connected....and yes the round piece that plugs into the laptop gets extremely hot....

Then my guess is there there is a problem in the circuitry somewhere between your power plug and your battery. However, it could be a lot of different things. If you can get your hands on a digital multimeter, a few tests could greatly narrow down the problem.

hmmmmm.....ok...I appreciate everyones help.....it looks like I wont be able to try to repair this myself....Ill take it to a shop....Thanks again everyone
