What is the min wattage that I need 2 run a P4 3.2 ghz w/ 40gb drive & 1gb memory?

ok, reason i ask is cause i was just given a tower (ripped out everything but te 250w psu). do u think 250 will work? just lookin 2 cleanup the hard drive.

I really think that you need a 350w PSU to cover for that set. 250w would be pushing it.

its the prescott famiy (not sure if thats the info u wanted)

If ur not gonna do any major update, meaning hardware, a 350-400w should be enough.

good luck.

A good 300W will be plenty. Even 250W will be enough.

For reference, a Dual Core, 4GB w/ 2HDDs and a HD4850 can be powered by a good 350W. A Quad Core with 4GB, 2HDDs, and a HD4870/GTX260 can be run on a VX450.

You don't need more than 300. 500 or more watts would be a complete waste

Back in the day I ran a 3.0 GHz prescott, X800 pro, 2 GB of RAM, and a 200 GB hard drive on a 350 watt power supply and had enough juice to overclock my processor to 4.2 GHz. I gave that computer to my parents and it's still going strong years later. I'll admit that was with a high quality 350 watt power supply though. Still, your 250 watt should be fine as long as you don't overclock or put a beast of a video card in the computer.

yes, theres no plans on overclocking. its not even gonna be a gaming computer (not right now anyways). all i plan on doing is working on getting the hard drive defragmented & just go from there.

get at least one thats 450+ watts and is also 80 plus certified

at least 500 for sure.

just to be safe.

He definitely does not need a 450 or 500W power supply. Please don't post bogus responses. I'm not sure where you guys are getting this information from... If you plug his information into those links you find out that he needs under 200W. So the 250W PSU should be fine.

If you decided to put 2 4850s in CrossFire into his set up, you would only need a 400W PSU.

exactly what metro said. dont be assuming that the machine is a gaming computer. IT IS NOT. it has no video card, no sound card, just has a simply p4 3.2 ghz cpu (no oc) w/ 1gb memory & 40 gb hd. all that combined doesnt need 500w psu. please, my current system might need it, but not this poj (piece of junk) system that im working on. besides i did check out 1 of those calculators & it did suggest 327w, so i will look into gettin a 350w.
