External HDD Ticking noise.

Before you say "Look on Google", I just want to clarify I have;

I am currently using an Acomdata 250G external HDD. I've had this piece for two years. Just yesterday morning (May 2nd), it was in perfect condition. I turned it off before going to bed, I wake up this morning to turn in back on and it made the ticking noise.

Here's the true problem behind it : My computer does not recognize or even pick up that there is hardware. It makes that little annoying sound when you connect any USB thing, but quickly makes the other sound as if you unplugged it.

I will resort to the various tips given from my Google search. But I am hoping someone has a better idea than putting it in the freezer or shoving a few hundred bucks outta my ass to get it fixed.

Is it an HDD with external power supply or does it only take power from the USB port.. If it only takes power from the USB port it just isn't getting enough power...

If this is the case you can get special cables wich take power from 2 USB ports...


Note: that ticking noise sounds like the HDD can't get up to speed, right ?

It's an external HDD that requires power of its own; not through the USB port. I tried looking up on Google, as stated, and they say my HDD is pretty much done for. I can somewhat get it repaired, but it'll cost me a few hundred bucks. :(
 
well depending on the interface you can just open up the external closure and stick it in your computer. You can also buy another HDD enclosure and stick it in there. it sounds like the Power for it has gone bad because the drive seems to not be getting enough juice. If it still doesnt work after you but it in a new enclosure or in your computer case then its the actual drive.
 
I had an external seagate drive that did the same thing. Just screw it open and throw it in an enclosure like Clarko mentioned, and you'll be all set. Enclosure's are pretty cheap too. (check eGO mall ;) )
 
Basically your eternal hard drive consists of two things, the hard drive, and the enclosure/controller. What you will need to do is open your external HD and remove the HD from it (it will be a regular every day hard drive) then buy a seperate enclosure matching the size and format of the hard drive (eg, 3.5" SATA) was mine.
Then place the hard drive into the new enclosure and you will be golden.

Depends on the tick. Sometimes it's the heads sweeping back and forth, and if you're really unlucky, it's them crashing on the platters.

Looks like these fail fairly often for people.

You can try cracking that thing open, and installing the drive directly. Of once you have the drive out, you can see who really made it, and run their diagnostics on it.

The situation isn't hopeless yet, but the odds are against you.
 
Yep sounds like the spendil(right?) broke the little piece of metal that reads the drive and all that good stuff if it broke you get a ticking noise.
