new to tf2

hey everybody wipeout just gave me a guest pass to tf2 so i was just wondering some good strategies and the best s starting class and which server i should play on. i dont want to be really bad so all advice is welcome

Whatever you do don't start out as pyro! Try engie or medic so you can observe other players and see their strategies.

I would say, try pyro, its definitely the easiest class out there. But Engineer does seem easier, yea, i would say, start with engineer, thats the class i started off with, now im the best player

medic first follow people around, heal them, communicate with them, that way you can observe, like Synn says. you also will be learning how to dodge shots/explosives (and you'll be behind teammates). (medic also has decent amount of hp and speed) when someone calls out for medic though, watch out it may be a spy, so also you'll be learnin how to spy-check. and another, keep in mind the medic syringe gun shoots as an arc so shoot above players heads the further they are- good depth-target practice! so there you go, 4 major aspects- observation, dodging, spy-checkin', shooting. engi is good too, but w/medic you can move more to the front lines.

I would start out as medic. One of the most difficult parts when you first start playing tf2 is learning the maps. As a medic, you can follow other people who know the maps, and observe how other people play the game. Also, you can almost never have too many medics on a team, and you will be valued even if you're a bit of a newb.


I personally found that the 2Fort Instant Respawn server (208.43.203.93:27015) was a good one to start with. First, its an easy map to learn. Second, you don't have to spend all of your time waiting to respawn (assuming you'll die a lot in your first weeks).

Hmmm, insurgency to TF2... that's going to be a large leap.

I'd suggest you join a server and spectate a few times. Watch what people are doing, when you find a class that looks awesome to you, join a team and learn how to play it.

Left and right mouse buttons will switch between players/stationary cameras. Spacebar will switch between third person, free-floating mode, and first-person view.

I'd recommend first-person view.

I'd also suggest you start out on one of the CP maps like Dustbowl, you're used to capture points rather than payload or capture the intel.

Once you get a feel for a map try other classes out. You'll see that each class has a specific role. Eventually you'll see how all 9 classes come together to become the awesomness that is TF2. Also, try and look for stuff on youtube. There are some great tutorials for every class. All the maps have little intros to them when you first start out. When you join a server click on the "watch movie" button.

I'd say start with 1 class for a bit, but then move around with other classes. Medic is pretty easy to start out with and you will always be a benefit to the team. Plus you get to heal all the people and observe what they are doing and how to play that class.

Medics are an easy class. Follow the heavy weapons guy, and when you're under fire, hide behind obstacles. Make use of crouch.

Also, don't forget that the medic's healing gun can travel quite a distance, so you don't have to be right on top of the person you're healing.

Yep, with the special Proton Pack errr I mean Medigun.

You do "shoot" them- you click and hold- actually, i really recommend to change the default option for that, in the "options", go to "multiplayer", then "advanced"- there's a check box for something like one-click effect, might say pyro flamethrower but this is also with the medi-gun. holding down the mouse to heal gets tiring and it's much easier to make it a one-click heal effect, and click again to stop healing.

Good or somewhat easy classes to start with: Medic, Engineer, Heavy, Demoman, Soldier, and Pyro

Classes to avoid at first(until you get your "feet wet"): Spy, Scout, Sniper

Just remember: HAVE FUN!
