Inspired by Deathhunter's Pyro guide I decided to write one for soldier. Here goes:
Class Overview
Soldier is an offensive class armed with a devastating rocket launcher, shotgun and the military etrenchment tool a.k.a. shovel. Rocket jumps allow him to bring confusion into enemy lines and to launch suprise attacks on unsuspecting victims. He is the second slowest class in the game but if you aim your rocket launcher right all the speed in the world won't help your target. The Soldier has 200 hp.
Rocket jumping
Using rockets to jump extremely high is called rocket jumping. To learn how to rocket jump watch this video: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRof_bR5gGg&feature=related[/ame] NOTE: THIS VIDEO WAS NOT MADE BY ME!!!
Class Weapons
Rocket Launcher
Rocket launcher is a multi-purpose weapon that fires slow rockets. It can hold max. 4 rockets in the "clip" and another 20 in reserve. Best way to use this weapon is to fire it at your opponents feet so that they can't avoid the blast.
There is a little trick for taking out sentries: the rocket will always end up in the center of your crosshairs when fired but not in this case:
CLICK .
As you can see if you stand next to the edge of the wall and point your crosshair close to the edge of the wall the rocket will not hit the wall, it will keep going. This way the sentries can't get you but you sure can get them. The rocket eventually ends up in the center of your crosshairs but it does that behind the wall. Also, always try to fire your rockets at the highest point of a jump so that you get better angle (no backblasting).
Shotgun
Shotgun is soldiers secondary weapon but you will see that is a very important weapon for this class. It holds 6 rounds in the clip and another 32 in reserve. This weapon is used to kill enemies when you fire all 4 rockets in the middle of a battle or to kill finish off/kill fast moving targets (see soldier VS scouts). It spreads its shot and is very deadly in close quarters.
Military etrenchment tool a.k.a. shovel
Soldiers melee weapon which deals a lot of damage. Use it only when you have expanded your rocket launcher and shotgun clips in the heat of battle or if you want to humiliate someone. It is also useful for bashing snipers on 2fort. BTW this weapon has a crazy taunt.
Soldier VS ...
Scouts
Fast and annoying scouts pose a bit of a challenge. The bets way to dispose of them is to fire rocket at their feet and in front of them and if that doesn't kill them pull out your shotgun and finish the job. Challenge rating: 3/5.
Soldiers
Aw man, this is not easy at all. The best thing to do is to try to suprise the other soldier and if you can't suprise him, the shotgun sill just have to do the job. When you see an enemy soldier just charge until you get within effective shotgun range. While running towards him try to weaken him with rockets. Rating: 4/5
Pyros
DO NOT let them anywhere near you becouse they will roast you like a turkey. Shooting rockets at them is not always a good idea becouse they can airblast them back towards you and kill you with your own rocket. If the pyro is using the backburner than you can use the rockets without fear of airblasing becouse the backburner does not posses the airblast ability. Shotgun works very good against pyros. And one more important thing, never try to kill them with your melee weapon unless they are extremely low on health or if you want to die. Rating: 3/5
Demomans
Not hard at all unless they have sticky bombs nearby. Shover them with rockets while avoiding their explosives. Don't get too close becouse they will hit you with the grenade launcher. PS Rocket launcher is good for removing large numbers of stickies Rating: 2/5
Heavies
Soldiers nemesis. The heavy is very hard to kill and if he has a medic healing him than do not attack him alone unless you have a GREAT plan. Suprise attacks work the best. Since heavies are slow it shouldn't be a problem to send 4 rockets at his feet and than try to finish him off with your shotgun. If he has a medic aim for the medic first and than take cover to reload and grab a medpack. Rating: 5/5
Engineers
Not a challenge at all you can take them head on with your shotgun or use the rocket launcher if you are eager to get some fast kills. Dealing with sentries was described earlier. Rating: 2/5
Medics
Easy. You + shotgun = one dead medic. Medics are not a combat class so killing them is easy unless they are healing someone. Rating: 1,5/5
Snipers
Snipers are a big problem when they are far away but in close quarters they stand no chance, you can even shovelize them. When they are far away try to pin them down them with rockets and try to move closer to even the odds. Rating: 3/5
Spies
When undisguised and uncloaked, shovel meat. But cloaked/ disguised they pose a problem. The only cure is constant spychecking. Use your shovel to do this. Rating: 3/5
FAQ
Q: What if I know a Heavy is around the corner, how do I deal with that?
A: Try to suprise him, it will take some time (2 seconds) before he is able to fire at you with the minigun. Race against time. 3 or 4 rockets should do the trick. If the heavy is already spinning his minigun than just back away, his shots will spread and your rockets are always spot-on.
Q: What are some good, common places to rocket jump and give yourself an advantage?
A: Usually high places, places with lots of cover and places where enemy snipers are. Rocket jumping gives you an element of suprise.
Q: How should you lead your shots?
A: No guide can teach you this, but i can offer some tips. It depends of the speed of the target. Never try to hit someones body with the rocket (lead shot), Always try to shoot the rocket at their feet.
Q: Why is my shotgun/shovel important, i.e. why should I use my shotgun in close-quarters when my Rocket launcher does way more damage at that distance?
A: Those weapons are important because they can't damage you like the rocket. In close quarters the rocket you fire can easily damage you, and that would just help the guy that is trying to kill you..
Q: When should I reload?
A: When there are no enemies around or if you are in the middle of a battle then just try to avoid enemy fire while reloading.
Q: How many rockets should I fire given my distance to an enemy?
A: Long range: 1 just to weaken your enemy, mid range: 2 to remove a large portion of his health and then pull out your shotgun to finish him off, short range: all four to send him to the eternal hunting grounds.
Q: What sort of combat situations should I avoid and let another class deal with?
A: Situations in which you are low on health, ammo or both or outnumbered more then 2:1.
Q: What is the best way to take out a Sentry nest by myself?
A: Already explained. The rocket launcher paragraph.

A word from the author
Soldiers is my favourite class becouse it is both fun and devastating. If you like high jumps, rocket shovers, and big explosions than you will love the soldier. Feel free to rate and comment this guide but don't post it on any other sites without asking me for permission. Thanks for reading and I hope I helped you with this guide. If you have any questions just PM me and I will answer it as soon as i can.
