Wassup, Spies often take advantage of new players who play heavy or soldier or some other "high priority" class. Well here is a guide for all new players who want to ensure that spies are a bit less of a trouble. This guide will teach you how to recognize and kill them before they wreak havoc on your team.

Same nick as you
When you see a teammate who is having exactly same nick as you, he is a spy for sure cuz if someone can't have the exact same nick as you, the game will add "(1)", without quotes to the player who came on the server as the second player with the same nick.

Non existing class
This is an often spy mistake when there are teams of less than 6 players. You can recognize them by taking a quick look at the scoreboard, all you need to see are the classes of your teammates. If there is a teammate whose class is not listed in the scoreboard he is a spy.

Class in odd places
What is a sniper doing in the intel room? What is a scout doing on the last CP? What is a medic doing around sentry guns? Retorical questions, don't answer. He is spying. When you see a guy whose class is not where it is suppose to be spycheck immediately. Or the guy is just a N00b.

Cloaked soy bumping into you
When a cloaked spy bumps into you you will see some sort of distortion, you see a cloaked spy figure. Humiliating kill time.

Running away from pyros
Common mistake that new spies make. Running away from friendly pyros is a sure sign that something is not right. Perhaps he is afraid of fire or he is a spy.

Friendly push away.
All right, this is a good trick, when you bump into your teammate you will get pushed away, but when you bump into a disguised spy you will not get pushed away. Once again an opportunity for a nice melee kill.

Class speed
Spy-scout only. Disguised spies take the speed of the class they are using as disguise, except when they disguise as a scout. Than they will still have normal spy movement speed.

Spy-medic recognition
The disguise weapon for spy-medic is his primary weapon. These guys won't heal anyone. If you call him to heal you he wont do that. Altough, this is not always true.

Bubbles in the water
If a spy chooses a water route to your back lines, you will see bubbles in the water and there will be no one except you. Or is there??? Just wait until you and him get out of the water and than kill him.

"Teammate" being healed by enemy medic
Sometimes stupid medics break their teammates cover by healing him to get the ubercharge. Take the spy out and than kill his medic. Two for one.

"Teammate" not being shot at by enemy team members
Yep, often spy mistake. They think that they slip behind your lines without cloaking. Show them that they are sadly mistaken.

"Teammate" ignited by friendly pyro
Last but not least. If your "teammate" is ignited by friendly pyro he is a spy for sure. Let the pyro finish the job or kill the spy yourself. Also if you see moving flame than there is a cloaked spy that got ignited.

Ammo pack disappearing in front of you
If you see an ammo pack just disapper in front of you it is probably becouse a cloaked spy took it.

Leeching spies
Sometimes enemy spies will leach health and ammo from your teams dispensers. But some will do this while cloaked so you should see a beam from the dispenser.

Spy disguised as enemy
These will still have a nameplate even though they are not on your team.

Summary
I hope I helped to all you new players who are tired of being owned by spies. Feel free to comment this guide but do not post it on other sites without my permission.

Good guide. One problem:

Teleporter particles
Some spies use teleporters to get to the front lines. However, if he doesn't wait long enough for the particles to go away, you will see opposing team color and your teammate in the middle of it he is a spy.

This does not happen any more. At all. It's been fixed entirely. A disguised spy will not get teleporter particles when he teleports, and a spy who has recently gone through a teleporter will have his particles removed immediately after he disguises.

So anyone who has teleporter particles around them is not be a spy. Even the enemy team.

Imo, this is an ok guide...just basic stuff, but every class no matter what class you are you should learn to spycheck. Just turning around and scanning the area helps, because I tell you this...most good spies will not let you see your death comming, they will avoid bumping into you and just because they are on fire they wont let that come between them and someone with thier back turned. Unless you are aware of your surroundings, you will not notice drop stabs or stalking stabs, my advice is just learn to spy check turn around every time you are alone or huddled in a group.

here you guys go, i added a few things for all you non spies...ive posted this before, hope you guys LOL at it...all you new guys please take this guide serious ok...LOL.

I found this, hope all you spies like it, as i found it sarcastically funny.

As I'm sneaking behind enemy lines I see so many obviously stupid plays so I'll outline them for you:

Dear pyros,

You guys have only a small amount of ammo in your primary weapon, you shouldn't be wasting it on your teammates [it just distracts them]. You shouldn't waste it either by spraying when moving through choke points or turning corners.

Dear medics,

I see you're always looking around spastically when you're healing someone. Don't. Your heavy buddy is fixated in one direction and I'm sure he knows where to look much more than you do. After all he has many more kills than you.

Dear Heavies,

If you hear your medic buddy die [especially when he gives a crazy scream], don't bother turning around. He probably died from a stray bullet. After all he only has about 150 hp.

To everyone else here are some more helpful reminders:

Fallen weapons disappear over time just like ragdolls, if you see it happen you should probably go about your business. Same thing with medkits and amopacks. No point wasting your time looking for some crazy ghost who took them when you're needed on the front lines.

If you're walking and your progress is suddenly impeded you're probably lagging. The folks at these forums would be more than happy to resolve any network issues you may have.

If you see someone in your team near the front lines receiving absolutely no fire from your adversaries it's probably because they're that much better than you, try and look up to them.

If your teammate goes through a teleporter and gets immediately backstabbed, there is absolutely no reason why using the teleporter would result in death.

Finally when you are moving from the spawn to the front lines stay fixated on your goal. Looking behind occasionally is awkward and robs your team of valuable seconds.

To snipers: don't stand in corners, it makes it much easier for a demoman to hit you with grenades, instead stand at least a person length from any wall or barrier.

To engineers: if you see your sentry being sapped, pick up your wrench and rush to save it. Your number one priority is keeping that sentry alive. Ignore any pyros standing around, they're there to keep spies away.

To everyone else: if you see a teammate come out of an odd place, they probably got lost. Hey, we were all new to the game once. Help them out by showing them where to go, remember to lead the way!

Yes, very good advice.
Veery good.

Gentlemen

Or.. Erh. I mean MAGGOTS

Valve supports spies, not fair. BTW this guide was ment for new players not experienced player like you guys. And thx for pointing this out.

Non existing class
This is an often spy mistake when there are teams of less than 6 players. You can recognize them by taking a quick look at the scoreboard, all you need to see are the classes of your teammates. If there is a teammate whose class is not listed in the scoreboard he is a spy.

This is slightly wrong. When the spy is disguised as a class you do not have on your team I'm 99% sure he will automatically appear with your name, regardless of what class you are.

A few more spy finding tips...

If you see a teammate standing at the top of some stairs or a ramp and they're just staring back at you, it's probably a spy. Kill it with fire.

If you see ammo packs disappearing in front of you, a spy took 'em. Kill it with fire.

If you hear a death scream nearby from a teammate, spy did it. Kill it with fire.

If you can see a healing stream from a dispenser that leads to nobody, it's a spy. Kill it with fire.

If a teammate backs away from you, it's a spy. Kill it with fire.

Friendly spies will usually have a disguise mask on, enemy spies disguised as a friendly spy will never be masked. Kill it with fire.

Anyone who jumps over sentry guns/dispensers besides the person who built them is a spy. Kill it with fire.

If a teammate is on fire, they might be a spy. Kill it with more fire.

When in doubt, kill it with fire.

Remember also, A spy choosing an invalid disguise (not a class on your team) shows his name as yours.

A spy disguised as an enemy, you can see that they have a nameplate although they are not on your team.

A spy can appear to reload with the weapon he is disguised with, by reloading his revolver.

Disguising while cloaked does not give smoke.

Spycheck dispensers for leeching spies.

And scouts who double jump aren't spies because spies are incapable of doing that. So spare your ammo and stop torching me! :D
