My connection has steadily gotten worse, what to do?

Well, I've been playing CS:S fine for over 2 months on my computer at my Dad's House. It is running on a wireless connection, that is, well, pretty good. It's not a great connection, but it's always ran CS:S fine. So, when I get to my dad's after a week @ my moms, I realize my internet has begun to get extremely sluggish. Whenever I am about to get onto CS:S, I go onto the server list, and check thru the servers. Most servers show about 50-150 ping, which is normal. I enter the server, and the lag starts, throwing my ping to about 700 sometimes. Please help me, how do I get back to where it used to be?
 
You SURE it's the internet connection??

You where gone for a week. Did you check to see if your dad installed any new software that might be causing the problem?
 
Obviously I'm not. I'm having enough internet problems at the time without downloading porn, and I think that isn't appropriate talk for eGO. If someone can ACTUALLY help, please post.
 
Now it's happening with downloads. I hit about 350 kb/s tops and then my download goes down to roughly 35-50 kb/s. I really am just fed up. How do I fix this? I'm running virus scans with 3 different programs right now, only thing that was found was 2 adware cookies.
 
Its wireless, so interference from near by phones or any appliance can cause lag, or loss of connection. I'd suggest buying a 50 foot ethernet cord and then hard wiring your computer to the router.
 
My router is in the office building of my Harbor Master (I live on a Yacht). The scan seemed to help things, a bit. My ping still jolts up sometimes, but atleast it's playable for a few rounds.

Oh so you'll need more then 50 feet, got it :laugh: .

You have cable or DSL? with DSL you need to make sure you have all the settings in the router set correctly, for instance in order to keep a link longer then a day or two you must fill in the login name password etc in the routers configuration that way it can properly authenticate with the modem and your provider. If you have Cable then there is no need to do any of this.

Maybe make sure there is not someone else on your network. Even secured networks can get hacked.

I would suggest having your computer connected to your wireless then going into the router configuration and setting the "SSID Broadcast" to "Off" (if its a linksys thats the exact wording) this will make the router invisible to everyone that isnt already connected. Can help stave off those script kiddies that think they can hack. Give me more info about your router and such.
 
Well... all I really know is that what I'm looking at right now, my wireless connecter, that is hooked to my USB says this on the router: AirLink 191; 802.11g USB Adapter; 104dBi Antena.

The 'router' I believe is in the Office, and the whole marina connects to it. The thing is, I've never had a problem with connection and speeds before, but suddenly my internet connection has gotten so bad I'm lucky to play 5 minutes of CS:S before I hit 1000 ping.
 
You may seem to be looking at the last available option. Which is, buying a new router and a new modem. Go to the nearest bestbuy or go on newegg to buy a new one, this will for sure fix the problem (as long as it isnt your ISP)

Well if the entire marina connects to it then thats your problem right there. Someone is downloading files or half the marina is surfing the web. Maybe try playing in the middle of the night if the ping is better during the middle of the night when most people would be asleep then that answers your question right there.

We were told that only this (sorry for posting SH*T, I made a typo) USB Connector would work... the AirLink. Not sure though, I'll try the night thing. I'll get back to everyone.

Well how many people are in the marina at any given time? 10, 20, 30? All it would do is take one person to look up a adult oriented site and wham, there goes all the bandwidth.
 
The marina has over 200 occupants, about 20 of those are Live-aboards. I doubt ANYONE is looking at an adult site, their all old and like... yeah. I don't think that its a problem because my internet used to run fine.

Well let me know when you play at mid-night and see if the ping is better like i said if it is then its someone using all the badwidth. if not something else like a machine or something interfering with the wireless signal. Also sometimes cellphones and cordless phones can interfere with the signal as well.
 
Try asking your harbor master to renew the IP, cuz I had a very bad internet connection, and I renewed the IP, then it downloaded an 100MB file in like 5 seconds. Try that, if that doesnt work, try getting an Internet Cable and plugging it into a port in a wall.

Never even thought about that, its possible with a cable internet connection sometimes you need to renew the IP address. Good suggestion, if your harbor master dosnt know how, tell him to get the tech support to do it.
 
The midnight thing didn't have an effect. It actually lagged WORSE, if any changes occured. About renewing my IP, I may try that. Any other suggestions?
 
ive had a lot of problems with my wireless at home lately. ive noticed that it goes in and out, even though i have three routers working together. the only time i REALLY see a lot of problems is when i play games such as CSS AND download things(movies or songs on iTunes for example). If I were you, since the marina probably doesn't have the best internet connection(bandwidth), i'd keep it simple and just play steam at one time without doing anything else
