whenever i am playing INS, i usually have smooth gameplay, but when i look at a certain area, it varies in each map, i get a horrible drop in FPS. it isnt my video card cause it wouldnt play the game at all i it was that. and it mostly does it when im playing online. it works fine when im not connected to a server.

I'm guessing it's your choke.

Choke - Choke is server lag. Choke basically means that your computer is sending your players position, and what he does (shoot, nade, knife) to the server, and its not getting there. Counter Strike Source default is to send your players actions to the server 30 times a second. Choke is caused by two things:

1.
Your computer is sending too many packets to the server per second. If you try to send 100 commands to the server per second, and it can only accept 40, you are going to be getting 60 choke. This will make you SUCK, none of your shots will register, and only 40% of the things you try to make your player do will be done. (for solution, see below)
2.
The server is not able to read all of the information being sent to it. This can be caused by network lag at the server, or CPU lag at the server. The client cannot control this, but can accomodate for it (solution below)

Use net_graph 3 in console, and look for choke. If it's too high, your game wont run smoothly.

Applies to all source games though.

If it isn't Choke, as explained above, it could just be your video card being a little buggy in places with really high detail
I know it does this for me in areas with Source mods such as Age of Chivalry
Might be wrong, who knows.

the choke was 0-2. and when i looked around my FPS went from 25ish to like 10 or 12

here are my specs.....

Windows Vista
Processor: Intel? Pentium? Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 2940MB RAM
DirectX 10
Card name: Mobile Intel? 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Display Memory: 1341 MB
Dedicated Memory: 128 MB
Shared Memory: 1213 MB
Driver Version: 7.15.0010.1502

Its your chip bud, get a graphics card and all your problems will be gone.

anything under 20 FPS causes stuttering.

then why does it play smoothly in most places. i got on the INS forums and sow that alot of people are having this issue. my laptop passes the system requirments lab for half life 2

because some areas have more stuff to render, if your staring at a wall there isn't much your graphics chip has to process, if your on sinjar over looking on the bridge your computer has to render all those cars, people shooting, people moving, blood, wind effects, ETC.

true, but i joined an empty server and it played fine, then i got one one with few people it played fine, then i joined a full one and thats when it does it. offline it plays fine. dod runs fine.
