So yeah, there she is. I love it with all my <3. nothing better than a 9 min XP install (currently only having 1GB ram with my free computer i picked up so i figured i would only go with XP till i pick some more ram up, and then go with )

Need other information? Message me here! ill be checking it :D

Being fairly new to PC building and judging by your excited post, I'm guessing this is some super fast, unusually small hard drive?

Haha well, Western Digital has moved onto their Veloci-Raptor drives, and this is the only Raptor Drive. A normal Hard drive spins 7,200RPM, but a Raptor spins at 10,000 RPM. The sad thing about this drive, is that it is only SATA 1.5 (instead of SATA 3.0) so that does deter it a smidgen, but hey, its better than the IDE i had before this

Hmm, you might have been better of grabbing one of the 320 platter drives or a more dense drive. My 640GB 2 platter drive performs on par to a raptor in everything but random access times.

Also, it's not SCSI, so not fast enough (15k drives if you didn't know).

EDIT: I thought after, I don't know how well the 640's in raid compare if you raid two raptors together. So that's a possible upgrade path.

well i think part of it too with your 640GB drive is that its SATA 3.0 so it can throw lots more information out there. This is SATA 1.5 so its almost using all the bandwidth it can.

That kinda skews everything i believe, but i could be wrong

here is my raptor ;)

150gb Raptor X

EDIT:

So i did a speed test on my raptor:
Random Access: 8.4ms
CPU Utilization: 1% (+/-2%)
Average Read: 75.6MB/s

And on my 1TB Drive:
Random Access: 12.6ms
CPU Utilization: 1% (+/-2%)
Average Read: 92.5MB/S

And on my 2GB Atache flash drive for the fun of it:
Random Access: 9.3ms
CPU Utilization: 1%(+/-2%)
Average Read: 12.5MB/s

Well, that is part of it. The other part is the platter density is higher, so more info ina smaller space. So the drive heads have to move less to get to what they need. But random is slower, because the drives are slower. 10k vs 7.2k

Either way, raptors are good drives. Even better raided.

if i had enough for a 300gb velociraptor, i would get one. Right now I am waiting for solid state hard drives being cheaper, bigger, and more efficient. I might get another 1tb hdd and do a raid 0

i was going to buy a Veloci-Raptor, but i didnt have the money for it at the time.... so i went with the raptor.

I think my next purchase in the HDD field will be a SSD. Thats something im excited for, but wouldnt be for a while
