This is how unlocks work now, so don't post any questions about it :P

People are asking questions left and right about this, here's what I know.

  • Weapons are supposed to be completely random and common
  • Hats are also random but rare
  • Things are broken, so nothing is as common as valve intended
  • There is no other way to get stuff right now, things are ONLY gained by being in a server.
  • Therefore, you can be afk, spectating, whatever, and get items at the same rate as people actually playing (not considering the fact that it's broken, so often people can't get things at all)
  • You (yes, you, the one reading my unprofessional second person pronouns) can get weapons you already have :( it's all random "dumb" luck

Did I miss anything?

Looks about spot onto me.
and obviously 2nd option load-outs (ie. sascha - natascha ) can still drop even if you've already got them.

Oh yeah. Added that you can get weapons you already have.

Yep I left my computer on overnight while in a empty server in spectate mode. I came back to see I have gotten 3 sandviches, 2 krietzkreigs, and 2 backburners. However I got the cloak and dagger when I finally came back to play the medic the following day. Spectating unlock Confirmed.

P.S. The cloak and dagger is really cool. Can't wait till actual spy users get their hands on it, their going to love it. I really wanted the huntsman bow and jarate - but thats just me.

I managed to get the Ambassador while in the setup period for a payload map, as a blue demoman. Can't get much more random than that.

I just watched a frag video on the Ambassador. It looks extremely overpowered. Like a sniper rifle that shoots twice as fast. :-/ I'd post the video but there's potty-language in it.

Interesting. Now, I don't have it myself, but I read on the TF2 Steam forums that many think it's underpowered. Guess I'll have to see when I get it

So am I understanding the new unlock system correctly - I start my own local server, go afk, and check to see if everything is unlocked in the morning? Can't say I understand why they would make it work this way.

They have fixed it. Now it sucks. They need to make the headshot an actual crit instead of a mini-crit.

Yes, but with an already buggy system, you are not guaranteed to get jack didly

I tried while I was away at work. Now the game was running for 12 straight hours and guess what I got

Jack Diddly, nuttin, nada, zilch.

What did we do?

* For the last number of months we've been working on using the Steam Cloud to store a player's inventory. With that finally in place, we were able to deploy a new system focused on the giving of items to players. That new system watches the amount of time that players are playing TF2, and gives them a chance to find items at regular intervals. They aren't guaranteed to get the item at those points, but they have a pretty good chance. We based the system on granting items on the amount of time played because we don't want players to have to do weird things like join achievement grinding servers to get new content. Basing it off time also has the benefit of ensuring that if you play a lot of TF2, you're going to get more items than players who don't.

How long do I have to play to get an item?

* When we were tuning this system we first looked at the average amount of time that players spend playing TF2 daily. From there, we set the goal of most players having around 20 items in their inventory after a couple of weeks of play. If you're someone who plays a lot of TF2, you're going to get items a lot faster than that. In the first few hours after the release yesterday, we had some issues that prevented the system from working properly, so that timeframe was not indicative of the system as it's designed."

Personally, I think that's bull. I have nearly 400 hours as sniper, its my main class. I've gotten 20 achievements legitimately. So far, all I've got to show for it is an extra backburner and Jarate...and I consider myself lucky in getting that last one. I have no idea how much more time I need to spend playing to get unlocks, but frankly, I'm not willing to play that much. Its absurd.

I've seen too many people switch to spectator on eGO servers when they find out they can get items speccing, it grinds my gears.

i agree, this new system is not really a good replacement for the old one, its even more open to abuse. at least with achivments to get stuff you could ether work at it or not and chose which ones you wanted to get now you have no chose
