Should there be a new class?

there should be a class with an assault rifle. An automatic semi powerful firing weapon, who runs faster than the heavy and slower than the scout. Just like an assault guy who can provide cover fire or whatnot for other classes. he can have 1 grenade. and maybe a smoke grenade also. He will be different than the heavy because he doesnt have as much ammo, maybe a 30 round clip. like an m16. A shoulder position fired weapon, like the m16, Just like in war u have a heavy machine gunner (the heavy). and the front line assault guy with the assault rifle (this new guy).

Let me help you out there

Megaman would make the perfect 10th class
health125 normal health and 50 health that an engi has to hit your to recover (uses metal) total of 175 hp
speed 90% or whatever the demo's speed is
Primary- chargable beam - No charge = 1 ammo and is a pustol like shot with
Lvl 1 charge(2 secs time) = 25 ammo and is a concentrated blast = to 85% of max scatter gun damge and 20% faster speed than a rocket
Lvl 2 Charge (4 secs time) = 75 ammo and is a rocket equivalent that goes 10% slower projectile speed
all charge levels are compression blastable
Secondary- Gain a skill of a class killed in a previous life.
Scout- Slide that does 2.5x normal melee dmg. Slow to get up / cooldown. Scouts with balls in their hand cause instant death.
Soldier- no ideas
Pyro- Flame wall about 3 heavy lenghts long, only ignites enemies
Demo- Alcohol launcher, gives the enemy 15hp but disoreints them (a drunk effect)
Heavy- Spring loaded boxing glove
Engi- Screw driver that instantly removes sapper but does no melee damage, can heal damage and heal buildables
Sniper- Boomerang
Medic- Chain saw
Spy- Item that can see cloaked enemies, however, it cannot see uncloaked enemies. 5 second use 15 second cooldown
(choosing the class to imitate would be similar to the spy case)
If you get them all then you can get a beam sword that does normal melee damage and has 80% crit rate.

Getting like a kill x amount on this class achievement would allow ONE free ablitity preequiped
or if the current system, Your randomly find class power chips
normal melee - knockback that does one scout bat damage, but it take normal melee speed

If Valve does it right, keeping it balanced, why would people not want another class? It's free content added to the game.

The new class should be the smack talker,,

yea,, about time those players got their own class!

I found a pretty decent thread of this on the official forums called "The Officer" who basically fights with an SMG and pistol, but buffs other classes (soldiers reload faster, pyros run faster, etc.) and it look pretty well made and fit the cartoonish system.

While many may not consider this a new character, I think the "Spectator" should be a war photographer who cant be hit. Right clicking will allow him to take scoped photos if he wants. And to make it fair, should any combat occur around the spectator, he turns invisible so people can fight without a body blocking their view.

Yeahhh... I put a link to that in my first post... :P

The game is perfect now, the classes are well tuned and balanced out. Unless Valve has had its mind set on a new class since they started making this game 22 years ago, a new class would most likely break the balance.
No new class, loving the game already!

Before adding a new character, there needs to be consideration of whether the classes are currently in balance, i.e. are there proper strengths for each class and proper counters for each class so they don't go out of control?

I would argue no. The only class which could be argued that doesn't have a counter is the Demo, but I think an ambushing Pyro or Spy is a great counter for him: Pyros because if ambushed well they can't fight back quickly enough to get the Pyro off their back and Spies because Demos can't spy-check very well.

So is there a need for another class? No. This also means that I personally would not want another class, because adding another class would mean it would somehow need to counter something while being countered itself. And, personally, that's a hard kind of metagame to consider. This is why next iterations of fighting games often come up imbalanced: adding new characters throws an unpredictable new element into the metagame.

I think, for pub play, TF2 has been designed particularly well so that all classes can counter or be countered.

Of course, there's still the issue of "usefulness". For instance, I'd rather have another Soldier or Demo on my team than a Spy or Sniper because I know they'll be able to do more direct progress. But I think the classes are built so that even the most "fringe" class can surprise people and become instrumental in certain games. It's all quite elegant, if you ask me.

EDIT: As for the Officer, it would be a strange support class because it doesn't seem like the powers he is given would necessarily turn the tide in a game, rather it would just be helpful to specific players. Because of that, it seems like it wouldn't affect gameplay balance at all.

But then again, why would you play a character that does a bunch of work for no real reward? At least the Medic gets an Ubercharge, something which makes and breaks games, and the Engineer gets a killing machine that racks up points for him. I'm not sure why anyone would want to play the Officer since he seems so unfulfilling.

A buff would be awesome when we raid the mystic cavern under dustbowl... I vote yes on the officer :/

Yes. Overall it would really depend on what the class is. The last thing we need is a lame over/under powered class that looks horrible.

I think adding another class would destabilize the already relatively stable game.
With each new update we are "getting another character" in my opinion. Each new update provided a different view and style of playing for each character. The new medic unlocks allows for a more aggressive medic play style. The pyro unlocks allow for more up close and personal attacks, while also adding range with the flare gun. The heavy unlocks allow the heavy to survive longer without a medic. The scout unlocks give scouts a more well rounded approach. The spy's new watches allows for a more stealthy spy to stay alive. The sniper can now be more apart of the action. All these new play styles and old ones make the game fell new even without adding a new character. I hope Valve doesn't add a new character.
