I usually make some sort of recognition that what the person said is funny if I type lol. Sometimes though, I just use it if I don't have anything to say.

Funny story, my girlfriend overuses it, emphasis on the word OVER. She'll say things like: my stomach hurts lol, I'm so mad at my mom lol and other such situations when lol is NOT appropriate. Really takes the punch out of every negative thing she says

Pretty true, I don't just start rolling on the floor when I kill someone on TF2. I'd do the "Yes!" but that'll be it. :S If your one of the people that kill me constantly and I get you back, I'd usually make the effort to point at the screen and yell.."Take that *class name*"
