optical drive doesn't really matter.

just get a reliable brand like LG or something. speeds are pretty uniform and then just decide if you need/want bluray and dvd.

keyboard is by far personal preference. i just use a nice usb MS keyboard but some people are crazy about the G15 even though i personally think it's a waste of money. and i don't like keyboards that curve, i just like a rectangle one - nothing fancy.

if possible for monitors, i'd do 2x22s. that's what i use now and there's nothing to compare to having two SEPARATE workspaces versus 1 big one. the visual division of tasks is awesome.

whether for doing other work and needing to compare two word documents, working in graphic software, watching a movie while surfing the web, or playing a game and having your bar on the other monitor so you can easily see if someone messages you or you want to read a website while you're dead or something... UNBEATABLE!

even if not, i think 22s are big enough and 24s get into the range of too big, imo.

hope i helped.

ps here's a picture of my desktop http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/detsiwt/desktop.jpg

left side is for games or movies and is my main monitor.

you can see i usually have a browser, msn window, msn messages, and my nav bar on the right side.

Monitor i would go with a LG (I have a 20.1 Wide LG its sweet) with a good refresh rate of 2MS (only the best) or a samsung either will do anything else is a waste, I have the G15 its nice, the extra USB ports help too if you want to connect a wired game pad like a xbox 360 controller or something. The back lit keyboard is nice and you can change the brightness of it too think it has 3 settings although half of my keys no longer light up but thats after 2 maybe 3 years of use too.
But it looks like you have a good setup right there.

Cheap generic drives cost around ?50 for 500GB
Monitor should be flat screen with a pixel of at least 1600 x 1200
Mine is set to 1600 x 1200 (it's awesome)
As for a keyboard did you not check the Trade/Selling listings?
Someone is selling a keyboard buy it off them, it's an okay keyboard, just your typical one...
To be honest, you don't even need a hardcore keyboard...

What about your graphics card?
What the memory on that?
Is it 1GB?
I doubt it is worth how THAT much
If you cut it down of a card that is $150 then you can get more memory/better CPU...

Power supply is SUPER overkill, I'd say get the Corsair TX650 great PSU and will handle everything perfectly. Everything else is pretty good.

XD, I forgot the operating system!

So thats another $250 added on there for Vista Home Premium.......or I could take a risk and install Windows 7....should I take a risk but chop off 250, or spend more and get home premium?

Dang this is going to help me.....I'm really thinking of making a gaming computer. But what about Laptops instead of buying everything for Another computer.

hey man, for $10 you can get a 500gb sata drive. did the research for ya on 2 different company drives: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...mpareItemList=N82E16822136073,N82E16822148395

also i did a search into monitors. since majority of the monitors have 4-5ms, id say go that direction, that way you have plenty of selection of monitors to pick from. they have 22" & 24" monitors that are on sale w/ free shipping. i have a 22" monitor from a no so popular company called envision & got the monitor from best buy from $150, but still has been good 2 me.

We have a winner for the monitor and optical drive, thanks slusserjon. I still need a sound card, speakers, and the opinions on if I should get windows 7 and shave off $250, or get windows vista home premium.

go for windows 7, you won't regret it. Installs very easily with most of the drivers loading automatically, and it functions very well.

Also, go for the corsair power supply. Best bang for your buck seems to be 500gb and 1tb hard drives right now, so I'd suggest that route as well.

Also, when it comes to speakers, what kinda speakers you looking @ getting? Im planning on selling my Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker system. Ive had it for like probably 2 years now, absolutely no issues. If you wish to go w/ more for surround sound experience, I completely understand. If you would like pix of the speaker, ill be glad to take some for ya, in case your curious.

I took a look into some of the items ur lookin 2 buy. I noticed that the standards for memory on ur motherboard is 1066 & 1200 (OC). I will admit that ive never gotten memory for a motherboard that wasnt under the standard, but im sure that getting memory under the standard will hinder the performance a little (anyone think im wrong on that?). Well just to make sure there are nothing hindered, what do you think of this memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166
This memory is highly praised (i should know, i have 4 of their 1gb stix in my machine right now & have yet to have an issue), not to mention that they have a lifetime limited warranty, which means if anything goes wrong, itll be replaced free of charge as long as you own them. I did just do research & found that the ocz memory you picked out had the same warranty on it, which is good. Either way, its your choice. If I remember correctly, your budget is 1500 bux, so i dont think $5 will hurt to get it to the standard req.

Well, the current settings pushes me over $2000, so I guess Ill save for christmas and turn my budget up to $2500

how about you change some of your stuff that ur planning on buying? like for ex. you really dont need a 25", its just nice to get 1 that big. id suggest gettin a lil smaller screen & saving yourself some $$. also i noticed this: if I get vista instead of windows. well hate to break this to ya, but Microsoft Windows is the one who created Vista. so you cant have one without the other, its just impossible. I would suggest getting Win 7 since its free & it wont require so much memory, whereas Vista requires 1.5 (last time i checked). also $100 for a keyboard?? i find that to be a lil outta the ballpark, esp for a gaming keyboard. thats just my opinion on that keyboard. but if you really wish to wait til x-mas, then thats cool as well. just trying to help ya get ur stuff sooner, but waiting is fine.

Right just been through it and have made a couple of changes to what you had specced up, added speakers and a sound card and also included Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit and have got it at a grand total of $1890.85 so that leaves you some left in your budget if there are any changes you want to make to it. (There are 4 bundles that drop the price down by $85 and also $100 worth of mail in rebates which brings it down further if you remember to send them in)

The Main changes here are the RAM, which I have gone for a higher speed which the motherboard can take, the motherboard which has a faster FSB however can only cope with 8GB of RAM, which I don't view as much of a problem because your unlikely to expand to over that on DDR2 in the near future. Also I've changed from the GTX280 to the Radeon HD 4890 as they are on the whole two very similar cards with the Radeon only slightly out performing the GTX280 on higher resolutions. The Speakers I've added as they are the ones I'm currently using however they are more there to inflate the price to something more realistic than a recommendation as although they are great speakers I find when listening to music they are just not as clear as I'd hoped, however for gaming they are fantastic giving you a full surround sound effect. The Sound Card is not on any recommendation other than the reviews on newegg and past experience with ASUS sound cards.

That's the list of it all there (linked directly rather than post the image as its quite large)

1st choice: 90-200

Still damn good: 60

As far as operating systems go.... I'm with xp, love it stable and fast. All in all i say windows 7 is the better choice, just you will have to reinstall for each release candidate and the final version.

also if you have any money left over. think about a awesome headset (turtle beach or steel series), or something that will help you ping. One would be D-Link's gamers lounge router, or the bigfoot NIC(<=awesome). have a look at each but its worthless to buy both since they do pretty much the same thing.
