Need Help Designing a New Gaming Rig

You'd have to go to a AM3 Processor.

As for the difference in performance, remember that the benchmarks shown are on systems that have DDR2 memory because the AM2+ processors don't have DDR3 memory controllers. AM3 supports DDR2 and DDR3, AM2/AM2+ only support DDR2. Personally, I don't know that is worth the money, but if you want to do it:

Gigabyte M790X-UD4P is pretty much the same board as the other with DDR3 support and AM3 only compatibility.

ok, i've been spec'ing out what I'm probably going to get...need some input/advice please..

Subtotal = $984.88
Shipping = $36.69
Total = $1,021.57

I'm not sure if DDR3 is worth it if your not an enthusiast, DDR2 will do just fine.

Correct, DDR2 actually performs better than almost all DDR3 currently because of the terrible latency's and timings on most DDR3.

Only reason at this point in time to go DDR3 is if you need to. If you have a choice low latency high speed DDR2 is vastly superior and much cheaper.

Very nice dragon, im just not to sure on that CPU cooler; sounds a little..eh for your cpu.

What would you recommend? I don't want one that will block off a memory card slot. That one has lots of reviews....all the AMD peeps said it was good. (intel people said the connector sucked for them)

hey dragond, i read into the heatsink that you mentioned & read quite a few bad reports. this is a heatsink that i would highly recommend: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103057
1 of my friends from quakecon has this on his cpu (not sure which cpu it is), but it looked good in his system. he always has the Cooler Master RC 690, which is a beast of a case. just somethin 4 u 2 look into.

looks good. Hold steady to the 275!

Buy your lady something nice with the money you saved and you will be way happier than you would have been with the 285!

Remember, "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"

What do you guys think of this cpu cooler? Would it be better?

Tuniq Tower 120 Universal CPU Cooler 120mm LED Cooling Fan and Fan Controller/Heatsink - $54.99 ($29.99 after $25.00 Mail-In Rebate )

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I would highly recommend going with a Core i7 based system unless you plan on upgrading again in 2 more years. The Phenom II is good, but the i7 is just flat out faster.

Here is how I would build it.

Antec 1200 - 174.99

EVGA GTX 275 - 239.99

Patriot 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1066 Triple Channel RAM - 79.99

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66ghz LGA 1366 130w Quad Core Processor - 279.99

Noctua NH-UP12 SE1366 CPU cooler - 79.99

COMBO:
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 Motherboard + Corsair 750TX 750 PSU - 314.98

TOTAL: 1,169.93 + shipping

that price is missing the PSU.

I really did think about going I7 (or at least DRR3). However,r I probably WILL rebuilt in a few years. I can almost promise you that there will be new spiffy cpu's then that won't work in the current motherboards, and memory, and stuff like that..

The PSU and mobo prices are bundled. They are a combo deal.

Even though you might rebuild it in a few years, with i7 you probably won't need to. Remember, it is a hyperthreaded quad, so 8 cores of power.

That said, it is not my decision and I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you end up with.

Not always true...

A hyperthreaded quad does not mean it has 8 cores. It means it can do 8 threads. Big difference.

Well, I pulled the trigger on the order. I kept the cooler I had picked out, changed the paste to artic silver (which I've used before), and added a dvd burner.

Click to see details of what I ordered

You will be happy to note Ryken, that I kept the 275 :)

I'm excited about getting the parts in... :thumbup:
