I'm currently trying to run a site and also a forum. Question is, when I buy a domain, for example www.example.com, and then create a forum, do I need a independent domain for it, or can I use the same one for free?

To make forum.example.com do I need to buy a new domain or can I use example.com

it depends on where you get your domain some suppliers allow unlimited sub-domains some have a limited amount.

I think this is you should asked to the people supply-ing your domain address im sure they have some help info's. they all seem different but then again the same.
