Windows 7 Gets Official Release Date: October 22

Release date is in line with previous reports, holiday-season ready

Windows 7 will indeed be hitting in time for the holiday season. The much-buzzed about operating system is set to inherit the operating system throne from the much-maligned Windows Vista, with general commercial availability starting on October 22 according to a Microsoft press release aired today.

Previous reports had come quite close to pegging the release date, with October 23 being the cited date in many reports. Bill Veghte, senior vice president for Microsoft's Windows, helped announced the true date, stating, "We feel confident that we will deliver Windows 7 with our partners on Oct. 22."

Microsoft faces tremendous pressure with the release. The company has been hounded by its investors in recent months for revenue drops related to the recession. These investors are quick to note that Windows Vista, while a solid seller, failed to surpass Windows XP.

Despite these problems, Vista and other Windows operating systems accounted for roughly 30 percent of the company's $60B USD in sales in 2008. Windows-based operating systems are currently installed on approximately 90 percent of the world's personal computers.

For Microsoft, the finalized release date represents both good news and bad. The good news is it will make the lucrative holiday shopping season, a frequent time for people to buy new systems. The bad news is that it will miss the equally lucrative back-to-school shopping season, where parents and college students typically purchase systems.

Microsoft does face some pressure, too -- Apple will be releasing its Snow Leopard OS sometime this summer or fall, and Google recently announced that its Android OS was coming to netbooks, courtesy of Acer. The challenges, for now, though are limited -- Windows 7 will almost certainly lead these next generation operating systems in sales.

Well, looks like I need to add another $300 to my new system shopping list.
 
The Windows7 beta has been pretty solid. Depending on how much you spend per year you may wish to invest in the Microsoft TechNet program. For under $250 per year you get access to all MS OS and Applications (except Visual Studio). This allows you to generate up to 10 keys per software package. This is for "testing" only; however I don't see where they have disabled old keys. I still have systems running w/ key I generated 4 years ago.
 
Can't wait til my college lets us grab this for FREE. Thats how I got Vista, as long as I'm enrolled in any PC tech courses I gets all kinds of good stuffs for free. :)

There is nothing wrong with it. I love it. I just really want 7. It runs like 10 times faster on my system.
I too have not had any problems with Vista. Especially with SP1 And SP2, Vista has gotten better.
 
How does Windows 7 size up for driver and hardware support right now?

I don't hate Vista but I don't like it as much as I did XP.

I don't want to rebuild my box only to find out that oops, sorry, your video card isn't supported so no gaming for you!
 
I believe Windows 7 has all the compabilities available now, I myself haven't had a single problem with anything and I use some weird stuff.. xP

Well time to start saving money to get it.
 
I still need to try out RC1; i've heard nothing but good reviews. Hopefully it will be a major improvement over vista.
 
I currently have Vista, then tried Windows 7 and they ran equally fast for me. I don't really care to much about the new interface or anything. Might eventually get it.

To bring my opinions to light, here, from the other Win 7 thread:

After the installation I got on to the Internet right away without having to battle hordes of bloodthirsty drivers all hellbent on not working. It didn't require any drivers at all. The graphics card was another thing. While I downloaded Nvidia's Win 7 drivers that supported my card as well which is odd (laptop, and Nvidia isn't known for making drivers for 'em) they didn't work. It gave some sort of error about a supported display adapter not being found but then in came the heroic rescuer - Windows Update which provides the latest WHQL accepted drivers for Windows 7. Guess what? My graphics card being among them and now this runs peachy.

While a bit weird at first the looks of this OS is awesome, when modified to your own liking.

..And well, just about anything else. But this isn't the most perfect OS.
Without modification I think the stacking icons on the taskbar are horrible and should be buried 6 feet under in a locked trunk made out of titanium and the key should be destroyed in a furnace. Gladly you can turn it off.
And and.. what else is there..

Well, the icons on the taskbar are huge, and when something is minimized into the tray it's pretty hard to dig it up from there - again - this is totally adjustable so it can't be held against it that much.

About performance, this clean install takes me about 1 minute to be all set to go at the time being compared to my Vista's 2 minutes so yay for this. Also, much lighter than Vista.

As for gaming, in World of Warcraft there was not much of an FPS-boost but who cares. TF2 and L4D then.. Team Fortress 2, I went from a resolution of 1024x768 and 30 fps to the max. my laptop allows me to, 1366x768 and 60 fps. So big difference there. Also, it opens up almost right after clicking the icon on Steam compared to Vista's 2 minute startup. L4D I had no difference in, runs peachy what so ever.

All in all, I am - at the time being - very happy that I decided to wipe my HDD clean and put this in. Hope this gives you some directions if you are considering this OS.
