my brother's computer is stuck in standby mode. I dont know the specs to it.
it is about a 6 year old gateway. Intel Pentium 4 processor runs windows xp home edition.

it wont leave standby mode. normally to get it off standby you press the power button that doesnt work. when i unplug it and plug it back in and press the power button to turn it on it just goes to standby nothing comes up on the screen. its all hooked up right.

any help would be appreciated. I think he should get a new 1 but he wants to get this 1 working.

try switching off the power supply, wait ten seconds, unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 10 seconds, turn the power supply back on. Then try to turn on the computer. If that does not work try turning on the computer again and try spamming delete, f8, and f10. If none of these work, try switching out the video card or monitor to see if you have bad hardware.

That sounds more like your powersupply has gone bad. We had the exact same type of issue a few months ago. It was a 6 year old gateway P4 with Win 2k on it.

If nothing displays on power up I would start to question the power supply. What is the model of that computer? It may be the same as the one we had. It was only like $40 for us to get a new power supply from gateway and that solved our problem.

Also when you turn on the computer does it sound like its starting up? I know those old gateways are sorta loud and you can tell. You may smell near the back at the power supply. Ours had a terrible electrical smell coming from the power supply.

Edit:
O yea also the gateway support was good. They may be able to help you and get ya headed with that replacement power supply.

yeh i guess i should have mentioned it could be the psu. its pretty obvious for me so...

check that your psu fan is working, and check to see if your hard drives spin when you turn on the computer.

Luckily powersupplys are cheap, just make sure it is the powersupply and not like your motherboard or something.

Power

Sounds like the power pack took a dump probably should get a new one or its your ram chips the computer wont do anything without the ram,or ifyou have been in your computer case lately you could have switched the ram chips around or try putting them in diffrent places.
