Monitor Problem (notebook)

Hey guys, this just happened to me a few minutes ago. My monitor suddenly turned gray with lines for a short while and I've started seeing "artifacts", horizontal lines running down my screen. It's happened twice already. Does anyone know what's wrong?

My specs:

HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC

Windows Vista? Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz
3068MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
 
I know its sounds stupid, but check that it is plugged in securely and check the power.

? you mean my laptop? It's plugged in and charging. Just so you know, I'm not talking about an external monitor here, I'm talking about my laptop screen.

edit: I have updated my drivers and the problem is solved. :]

Sorry for double posting, but I didn't want to make another thread.

The video card update didn't help a lot. The monitor has been flashing constantly now. After it flashes, the horizontal lines appear. When it flashes every other time, the lines disappear. Is there anything I can do about this? I'm still under warranty so I wouldn't try taking my notebook apart.
 
i'd say take it in and have them look at it, cuz the only thing i could think of was video card drivers
 
I tried going online to hcat with them, but there appears to be some type of error:

Unhandled exception caught: Error Message: Input string was not in a correct format.


Anyways, I poked around the site and read that there may be a new BIOS for my notebook and installing it may fix my problem. How do I check the version of my current BIOS? Also, how do I install the BIOS update? Just download and double click?
 
Go in safe mode and try removing your driver completely then install new ones ;)
 
Is your laptop running hot- I had a similar problem and ended up buying cooling fans for under the laptop
 
Sounds to me like the ribbon cable to his laptop display is loose. If you think you can do it yourself, crack that puppy open and plug it in more securely.

If you don't think you can do it safely, take it to a repair place.
 
Actually, white lines and artifacts on the screen is a clear sign of over heating. I would highly suggest as razor1 said and buy a cooling pad.
