How to get healed!

Thanks to all of you who contributed helpful suggestions. I have tried to incorporate them in the original post. Your suggestions have, I hope, made me a better medic.

Thanks again,

Quaffer

Also, if you find a really good partner, make sure you follow him. This can be hard, I should know as I'm usually the partner and I can jump around a lot. Your partner is most likely shooting at people in front of you and trying to take the fire. If there are people behind you shooting you (usually Scouts, and occasionally Spies) tell them, or run in front of them (if there's no one there) or to the side so your partner can deal with it. Don't stop healing and start shooting ESPECIALLY if your partner is being shot at, you're just there to keep him alive. And to help follow them, remember the medic beam, it will follow them. So if you still see the beam but not your partner, then there's your breadcrumb trail.

to kindof continue from that, there is a command in option that makes it so you dont have to hold down the fire button to heal someone. you just click it if you want to change to another person. i found that a great relief on my index finger.

I used to use that too, but the problem I have with it is that if you want to stop healing so you can heal someone else, you have to click to stop, then click on the new guy. Instead of just letting go and holding down again. I say it depends on playstyle. If you run around healing everyone, then just keep clicking. If you're staying with a partner then, yeah, it will help your finger.

I get a guilty pleasure from healing spies.

...and asking over voice for the nearest pyro to, "please kill the person I'm healing." I enjoy imposing existential emotional trauma :)

Also, as an effective Medic (since we mentioned having good partners) telling your partner of immediate threats to his life (spies, pyros and such) is super helpful. I can't count the number of times I yell "HEAVY BEHIND YOU, SPY!" through the mike and before I finish my sentence, he spins around, and boom, spy down. Sometimes I can storm a whole map with just one guy and randomly healing other people. I dunno if it's been mentioned yet, but a good Medic will slap some buffs all around him and can stay trained on your wicked destroying machine of a partner.

Also, dunno if this was covered (been a couple of days since I checked the big list) but running in front of sentries during an uber is a MUST for every class, be it Demoman, Pyro, Heavy or what have you. My trick is that I uber someone, run at the sentry, and turn my back at the sentry and run backwards at it, that way I don't lose my uber partner, and I absorb all the knock back. This is especially helpful for slow moving Heavies, or if your partner happens to get blown into the sky by stickies or whatnot and you can at least keep the beam trained on him for as long as possible.

Amen to that. Very good guide for people just starting out or think Medic is an easy job. I happen to be an expert at it though (lol just kidding). It it NOT an easy job UNLESS you have a very good person you are healing that watches your back constantly as long as you watch his. I love healing and ubering people that are completely aware of their surroundings, especially when I say "To your right!" and they instantly turn right and demolish the enemy next to them and go back to destroying people's lives. Man I love being a medic.

Eh, its not as effective as just doing it normally.

Example of medic spam:

I was on 2fort yesterday healing a heavy. As I was actively healing him he called for medic. Twice! Calling for a medic when he's already on the job is rude. Politeness promotes healing.

There is this little thing called situational awareness. It means you pay attention to what is going on around you and act accordingly. Good players use it.

For some reason I don't ask for medic but I keep getting them(normaly when I am spy hunting).. Anyone know why?

A good medic will be buffing (healing from 100% to 150%)(buffed players have little sparkles surrounding them) every member of his team that he sees. The buffing decays back down to 100% in a little while but while you're buffed you may be able to survive an attack that would normaly kill you. Buffing also counts toward charging an uber and a crit 'though not nearly as much as healing the injured.

Medics will continue to heal you if you're going in the same direction they are until they see someone else to heal. When a medic is healing you he get's kill assist credits for any kill you make so a medic who is not always healing someone is missing the boat.

If you are playing as a heavy, a pyro, a soldier or a demo the medic may be healing you as part of a buddy pair. Most medics will pair with a heavy or a pyro because those two classes deal out vast amounts of damage but only at close range. They tend to be in the thick of it and need healing the most. This leads to more points for the medic and faster charges for their uber and crits. If you want to work alone use your mic or text and say so.

Buddy pairs work best when they communicate.

you forgot to mention that kritzing spys is a valid and effective tactic, if the spy uses the normal revolver and is a decent shot :? i remember being Kritz'd in gravelpit before and shutting down half they're defence.

if you dont have anyone else, or plan for it, kritz spy is a valid tactic!

I don't want to be rude but healing a certain person is more benificial than healing another player. Usually people scream for medic when they are at -20 hp than normal, healing a player who just started playing and leaving one of the most skilled players unbuffed is sometimes a mistake where you have to pay the price for.

Some people are more skilled, and are able to do so much more damage and are more protective if they are continued to be buffed.

But I do love medical attention, but sometimes 3 medics are healing the same person, this slows everything down, don't do that, especially if you are already buffed to maximum health

Would you rather take half a second and heal that player with -20 health, or that player just dies or takes that med pack that is meant for the medics. It doesn't make sense to ignore players when you can heal them. The over-healed heavy can wait a few seconds, and if he can't he's probably not that great of a player.

Medics are unique in that have unlimited heals with one of their weapons. Why wouldn't you take advantage of this fact? It really doesn't make any sense to exclusively heal one player and ignore others. This doesn't mean that people shouldn't have "personal medics". It just means that they should try and heal more than one person when necessary. Slow down for a second, heal that scout on fire, he's not that useless.

Nah, it wasn't ment like that, it is more when you are in under fire, people yelling medic all around you, I rather heal then the person who I can trust and that can save me than healing scouts while the main player is taking damage

if nothing is wrong I heal everyone, but sometimes you have to make some choices

Well yea, if you're under fire it's totally different. Priorities is important to keep in mind.

Opinions obviously vary on this one. I'm siding with Vandall with this caveate. If you've been pairing up with someone and you stop to heal or buff someone else, tell your buddy! That way he doesn't go charging throught the door facing a sentry gun and a pyro thinking you're on the job. If your buddy has any sense he'll take a moment and watch your back. Two players do not a team make.
